Low power option with HDTV

Less power than you think

I recently purchased a used 27 inch HDTV which wouldn't turn on.  To verify that there were no other power supply problems, I monitored current with a really nice power meter. Manufacturers tag says 200W, but this TV only draws 132W on bright back light, 112W on middle and down to 62W on dark back light.  Some may not aware that there is an option to control the back light.  This has a really good power supply with power factor control, PF is between 96 and 98%. Surprised at the very low harmonics this introduces on the power line.  62W is not much more than some of my other smaller TVs and more than enough light if you view mostly at night.   Peak turn on current was 6.3A and OFF standby wattage was 4W.  Worth wile turning off with the main power switch.  Hope this is useful in deciding on your next TV purchase.

Out of curiosity, what is the make and model of that television?  I have a 32" LCD Haier TV which does appear to have a brightness and contrast feature, but I would have to measure the changes in power draw to see what if there was any effect.  It gets pretty warm on top of the thin console, like the older crt it replaced.  Rich

This TV is an Astar LTV-2701.  You should be able to find a back light control on the same pull up screen as contrast and brightness.   Brightness in a LCD tv has no effect on current, even picture options like cinema,user, normal, or high brightness.  The back light is an actual lamp which provides lighting to the screen.

   Our 42" LG brand LCD TV, fairly new, on full backlight uses about 240W, on minimum it's down to 105W.

   We run it off-grid no problems, on the minimum setting it's only using 30 to 50% more than the 20" CRT set it replaced.

   It's much nicer to look at.

I have an older 26 inch CRT TV I just checked and it draws 115W and 12W on off standby. That's more than twice what I thought it was it was drawing while off. I need to go around and see what else is wasting power.

My washing machine bizarrely was one of the worst, eating 10W when apparently 'off' at the machine.

But beware that the likes of the Kill-a-Watt can be particularly inaccurate measuring very low power consumption.  One of my meters now claims that 3W is being consumed even with nothing plugged in to it!

Hehe, can't help but see the pic of your TV show and think:

Dr. Phil? What a poser.

Not even a real doctor.

Sorry.

On topic;

As Damon noted, I don't think my killawatt can deal with low power draw. Just got one from Newegg and been playing with it.
