Just finished your book, an excellent read. In the section about towers you mention that there is no way to determine how much tension is in a guy wire, I know of a tool that could help you out. Performance sailors use these gauges to tune the standing rigging for the masts of their boats. Its a pretty simple device that just clips onto the wire and measures how hard it is to bend it a slightly.
