Threaded rod

Magnetic stainless steel

I recently ordered some 5/8" 18-8 stainless steel threaded rod for my 17 foot windmill, but it is mildly magnetic. Will this be a problem? There is a slight pull from a small neo magnet. Is there any stainless that is not magnetic? Any comments?

If the rod was cold worked to form threads it will acquire some magnetism.

If that is unacceptable, you can anneal it, but that will undo the hardening, which you probably need, since this is a threaded fastener.

I have noticed this with Chinese made stainless rod but it has not been a problem for me.

18 -8 means 18 percent chrome and 8 percent nickel .I've used it in hho cells as cathode the rod is heated and threaded from rolled rods . The rod will rust but not for a while and not at all if you brush on linseed oil (or spray on thin it down with Alcohol .

I say go for it. I used normal galvanized threaded rod on my stator mounts, and with both magnet rotors installed there isn't even a hint worth of cogging from the rods.

If you would use a single magnet rotor without any backing behind the coils (like otherpower's 7-footor or Hugh Piggot's 4 footer) then it might be a problem.

yes, much of the threaded rod I use is slightly magnetic, it's a non-issue as compared to the normal galvanized stuff which is extremely attracted to magnets.  I'd have no problem with using it... if the machine seems to cog when you're done then maybe there's a problem but I doubt it will unless you locate the rod very close to the magnet rotors.

My first set of all threads were galvanized. Since the bolts were more than 2" from the magnets, they worked with cogging.

My second set were stainless steel from the nut and bolt speciality store. They claim a small amount of ferrious materal is a must because of strength. They were willing to order completely non-megnetic all thread for me, but cautioned it's usage in high strength applications.

I found the same thing.  Out of about 10 lengths of all thread at the store, only one didn't stick to a magnet.  I know there are different grades of stainless & lower grade stainless steel has some ferous metal in it.

Windy--tried a large neo on  some different grades of SS I had laying
around.  The best I could find among my scraps was 316. This grade is
really bad for galling on threads, so decided to use the 18-8.  Seems
like the best all round grade.
