Some things take a long Time but finally flying.

After lots of issues finally got this 10 footer going.

Made possible by the generosity of many, and nearly a decade in the making:

Raised this 10 footer with a new cedar prop on it. It is on my 30 foot 4 leg tilt up tower. Takes one man about 20 minutes with a drill and a worm drive winch to raise. I raised it on July 1, 2009. The one above and behind is Zubblys [RIP] mill and it is my commission   from him to fly it to destruction. So far it just needs the wood refinished, I will do that this summer

A few weeks ago DanB, and DanF stopped on their way to MREA and another conference. They dropped off a set of Scottys blades with hub plates. They also laid out the assembly so I could put it together after finishing all the parts.
i put 7 coats of exterior urethane on them over the coarse of a week with long dry times between. They came out beautiful and I assembled it per instructions and it came out pretty much perfect:

I am not much good at pictures as I go along but I do get them after so no photos of the raw blades or other parts just a couple after the fact pictures.

The whole area is under upgrades so these will serve as the "before" pics for future projects I guess.

New 30 foot tower stub with the new 50 foot tube tower in the background:

Another view of the 30 foot stub upgrade:

Both current towers up, Zubblys mill in the background and the newly raised 10 footer with no prop for the test lift. I really like this photo:

Just the test lift tower and head:

I used a PVC sheet for the Diamond shaped tail vane as DanB suggested it would be a good material when he saw it in my stash.

THe real thing:

Overview of the main tower site:

Just wanted to share.

Big thanks to DanB, DanF, and a list I won't itemize because folks will get left out. It is a long list. DanB hacked off the head and gave it a lot more tilt back. I used to call it "Prop Killer" as it has eaten several props previously.

Here is how it pretty much looks today:

Enjoy!

Tons of high resolution photos are over HERE too large to put inline here but for those that like detail, there they are.

Awesome Tom, Looks like I really better get pedaling to even get close to catching up.

Thanks for sharing, would love to see more pics of the raising simply because it appears I need a lesson or two in physical dynamics LOL

Nice,
behoof

Way to go Tom. Are those modified water pumper towers ? About what size is the angle iron ? I assume it's angle iron anyway and how did you rig the gin pole ? I'm interested in free standing, tilt towers and yours look like what I had in mind. Keep us posted on how it runs, I'll bet you're watching it often.  Dave B.

Well Tom,
Nice to see a plan come together.... 10 years is a fair time frame to make it happen.
Good to see Zubs machine still making way.
Thanks for sharing your efforts. It is good to see a home "wind farm"

Mine is down at the moment.. (cancer in the magnets), but will be back up soon I hope.

Love the Spruce tree and the long grass. Must have some decent rain there.

oztules I think Tom is cheating it's winter here summer there, look at the hill behind in the last two photos and the long grass, if it's summer where is the dry grass?

Starting to be an impressive wind farm though, I am just going to have to build another one to stay ahead.

"if it's summer where is the dry grass?"

If Tom's area is experiencing anything like here in Colorado and the surrounding states, dry grass is hard to come by.
We've just finished up the 2nd wettest June since 1882 or thereabouts.  This morning it was 52°F... doubtful it was a record but much nicer than the past decade or so for the morning following the 4th of July.

I, for one, am glad global warming has come to an end... but I dread the inevitable "global cooling" zealots and their agenda.

i would like to know about the towers also.  i just posted about some lattice towers i found, and would like more info on how you made yours tilt.  haven't had a chance to check your link closely yet, so maybe the info is already there!

Now that's satisfaction!

Did you manage to use that big old winch (whose photo you posted in the spring) for raising this tower?

To all who responded;

Thanks for the kind words!

I decided it would make more overall sense if I responded to questions in one place.

Here goes:

Dave & defed;

This kind of shows the rigging I used on the 4

leg tilt up: If its unclear I could take more photos so the experts can tell me why its not good ;]

More detailed pictures can be selected from that page in the upper right corner.

Basically, that is a 21 foot 1.5 inch [I think] water pipe as the gin pole. It is attached to the horizontal brace that is at about 5 feet from the hinge. The bottom as shown rests on a heavy hunk of 3 or 4 inch and 3/16 thick angle iron that [replaces the original horizontal brace] over a pin so its loosely held in place. there is a positioning ring on the upper one as pictured again loosely positions it upright.  It is guyed to the sides to the tower itself with turnbuckles to keep it in place. Chain attaches from top of gin pole to the tower lift point [just below the blade tips]. The lift cable runs through a pulley on top of the gin pole back to the pulling post for double reduction. The puller is a Harbor Freight worm drive until I decipher a quick attach method to share the big winch that is on the 50 foot tube towers pulling post.

The leg towers are both salvaged water pumper towers and I think both are 2.5 inch angle iron legs. The shorter one was originally a 70 footer for an Aeromotor that got turned to spaghetti in a tornado. I only salvaged enough to build a 4 leg tower 20 feet tall from pieces straight enough to square up.

The taller one was built in place and I have to climb it and retract the stub to service the turbine.

You Aussies just have arse backwards seasons. We average 30 inches a year of precipitation so it is usually green spring to fall here in the upper Mississipi valley. Goes brown then white after the snows. Gets pretty cold sometimes in winter which I guess is the trade off for verdant summers.

Thanks for the interest.
