how the heck do you glue the magnets down?

gluing magnets

i've been reading alot about what to use to glue the magnets on with, but then i got to wondering....how the heck do you get the glue UNDER them?  the only way i can get mine into position is to slide them, and that seems like it would just push any glue away...

or do you just glue around the perimeter?

thanks as always.
Dave

Use super glue or epoxy ( Golfsmiths is what is the best in my mind for this as it's made for metal and has nor ferrous metal filler a big nono )some in the middle and slide it in place .
epoxy will have to set of coarse .

This brings up a question I've had for some time, but I don't recall seeing the answer yet.

Once I read about someone ordering magnets with a cantral hole that was champhered (funnel-shaped) which allowed a flush-headed bolt to securely hold the magnets, while the glue only kept it from rotating.

I recall the bolt in question was stainless steel to be non-magnetic. It seems if it worked well, we would see it used more often, so I imagine there was some problem that hasn't been commonly posted. Is there any problem with this arrangement?

i got magnets w/ the hole.  i do plan to put a bolt/pin to hold them.  i wanted to still put some glue under as i didn't plan to cast the magnets in resin.  just glue, pin and paint.

I will be ordering the magnets with the counter sunk hole, Dan Lenox used them with pins on his seventeen footer with no problem.
I will be using stainless screws and the Dans stainless shrunk on band method with no resin, according to all the experts here, as long as the fasteners are non ferris there should be no problem, and CMS will ship half with the countersink on the north side and half on the south side.
I aint skeered a nuthin......Oh S%*T! What was that?!!!

hmm...pretty sure mine are countersunk on both sides....but i should probably double check!  it's out in the barn, so i will have to do that tomorrow.

i'm making a Piggott 4' where the magnets are sideways.  the disk i have, they won't be all the way to the edge, so i don't think i can band it.  which is why i wanted to use some glue w/ the screw/pin.

Hmmm, I faced the same problem.
I painted the disks with 2 pak epoxy paint until I had a fair thickenss and then lightly sanded the disks.

Then I wanted to use the same two pack to "glue the magnets down".

So I used 2"x1/4" bar steel about 2'long. Placed the magnet on the bar a few inches in from the end, and painted the magnet base with the goo.

Then (with the template in place). you can use the steel rod/bar (whatever you want to call it) pivoting from the template area as a placement tool.

You place the end on the template, and slowly lower the lever/bar down into position, using it as a 2' lever. The magnet stays attracted to it until it is  on the plate, and then transfers to the plate, flat, and with the glue/epoxy paint flatly squashed out from under it.

By using thick steel for the lever, (1/4") the magnet is almost equally attracted to the lever as to the steel plate until it is firmly attracted to the plate. Then if you lift the lever up, the magnet should stay behind on the plate.

This gives total control, and allows almost flat placement.

Then I painted the magnets again with the epoxy paint, and let it pool around the base of the mags... they will never move, and should have enough epoxy between them and the steel to stop the damn rust.

Did you use gloves when manipulating the magnets in order to avoid getting hand moisture in contact with the magnets?

Yes and no.

I tried at first to use the latex type surgical gloves... but the magnets seemed to be able to pinch them  and tear them at every opportunity.

In the finish, I placed them on the steel bar, and wiped them with ethanol/methanol mix and fan dried them and then painted the epoxy paint onto them and the disk and then "levered" them gently down onto the disk... and them puddled heaps of epoxy paint around them (and everywhere else from the looks of my clothes)

I'm pretty sure the glue used by hard drive manufacturers is superglue . Encapsulating the mags is the only way to keep them from rusting .The weather gets to the edges and corners .Even the smallest rust can grow into a big problem the nickel is very fragile.

Granted, it's a motor conversion, but here it's even more important to attach the magnets than it is on the axial flux rotor.  I'm partial to using the screws for this.
