VAWT GENERATOR ideas..

VAWT low rpm generator

Hi...was thinking of making something like this.... http://www.youtube.com/TyPower2

looks good..... just working on a alt design that will work at this low speed.. was thinking of gearing.. say 3-1   so may be getting about 300rpm max....

lookin to charge 24v bateries..   and need to design a low rpm generator... would i be correct in thing that say.. a large dual rotor axial flux with  say 24magnets 18 coils...  90 turns of 18guage would be good start... or better to make smaller less magnets but to stack them to get voltage...  looking to get a few hundred watts...

I like the work  on the experiments page "wooden alternator".....

or an induction motor conversion.... I've seen one on ebay  240v 3phase 2hp 700rpm 1500w... but only 4amps... I assuming that the stator is wound with a higher rated wire then 4amp wire i.e 24 guage.

just can't decide which way to go..... curently build a Racecom - replica.. and getting about 150 rpm in 15mph wind..  with a good bit of torque..  size 26inch diameter 30 inches tall, 20x 4inch wide pvc guttering used...

Just like the look of this

any help would be greatly appreciated....

others might differ in opinions, but here is mine :)

yes it looks cool, however

it would have to be massively scaled up to make a couple hundred watts in
anything other than a tornado,, ok, maybe not a tornado but surely winds
in excess of 20 mph, and that only for a machine about 4 times this examples size.

the reality of VAWT is just not very impressive for most applications, "Except" for
those that are carefully designed and realistically applied, such as Ed @ windstuffnow.com has done.

he has spent years perfecting his machines, and if i were to think about going that
path i would sure look to Ed for lessons learned rather than be badly disappointed after putting a lot of effort/money/time into something.

thats my opinion, probably not shared by all, but probably closer to reality
than some?

That design would be perfect for a standalone low power device. There are LED street lights with an egg beater turbine on the top to supplement their solar charger.

The last one can also be used as a wifi relay.

just wondering how you think the helical vawt compares to something I have made simila to this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJFxHHB8Gc8&NR=1  (without the ducting)

The power ratings on many turbines shown on Youtube don't sound legit.
This one is an exception. 500 watts in 28mph wind sounds about right.

5 an 10kw from a small turbine won't happen in less than gale force winds.

P.T. Barnum said it quite eloquently:

"There's a sucker born every minute."

All this youtube as proof of outrageous claims crap gets old. If it was up to me we would only allow youtube links that include a still photo and was posted to youtube by the person posting the link here as well as at least some discussion in the post.

Waiting for yet another rehash video of the same thing is silly.

Anyway, more a general comment on the youtube "proof" which is about as lame as "wikipedia says..." in my personal opinion, of course.

Maybe I will toss up one of Windstuff Eds toy demo VAWTs with a miscalibrated ammeter and prove it makes 8 or 9 KW in a fart to make my point?

No offense, Ed. My claim not yours!

I have the kit and the camera and the internet so those are my qualifications. The same as anyone else.

As I understand it the capacity ratings on wind turbines are essentially the maximum power they can produce in a storm wind just slower than one that will exceed either the resistive heating limits and burn out the genny or the mechanical limits and tear the machine apart.

They are not particularly related to the expected production, which is minuscule by comparison.

You need a wind speed vs. output power table or graph, or a power-at-some-windspeed rating, to get a better idea of what to expect.

The words on some of these adverts can be confusing or misleading (most ads) inasmuch, the 10KW Vawt said that it is a"10 KW wind turbine" not that it generates 10 KW. Sucker language. These vawt mfgrs are scum far as I am concerned.

ok I uunderstand the you-tube comments.. ...and understand how things can be so over rated....

my question is.. which do you belief would be the better vawt to make.... between http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hALmHf7k31E

and

this one http://www.youtube.com/user/TyPower2

using gearing to the generator

many thanks

whichever was cheapest and easiest to build, that is if i were forced to
choose between only those two and had no other choices.

for all the effort expended i probably would just get a stack of plastic
55 gallon drums and make a triple savonious, and when that wasn't enough
i would just build another, and another till i had enough.

for something simpler i would go for a sailwing, canvas covered wings are
pretty cheap and easy, and likely would make far more power than any of these...

but then again it would be a Horizontal machine, which you wanna steer away from?

how much power are you looking for? how much wind have you got to work with?

I've got a solid 10mph most days..

I'm looking for a Vawt, as my neighbour is a right Tw!t...and in the UK I must apply for planning permission... the neighbour will 200% object to any turbine I put up...But I think a VAWT will look more attractive and is so much quieter...

so hence I'm looking for a silent Vawt... I 100% understand that a HAWT is so much better on many grouds... but it really is not an option...:-(

THe Racecom copy Ive built works ok..thinking of using wind deflecters..but its starting to look ugly... I really like the look of the IKE VAWT...  thinking of making it about 1.5M diameter by say 3.5M tall..   ... thinking the alt would use about 24 magnets 18 coils... and geared 3-1....

Take Ed's working kit, one of the few vawts I have seen posted that are functional, (I think Volvo still has his hundred bucks) and with a little bit of 'marketing' pizazz, you have:

8.5 KW unit, assembles in minutes on your table top.  Turns in the slightest of breezes.  Never need to buy power from the utility again.  All this can be yours for the startlingly low price of . . .  Just three easy payments.

Where do we send the money ? ? ?
