inexpensive and quality?

searched around the boards a bit and never did find a recommendation, tho i did find the question asked a couple times.

anyone have a source for an decent drawknife that is also on the lower cost side?  i didn't find any locally.

i know i can find an 'antique' one pretty cheap, probably excellent quality too, if not abused, but then i have to figure out how to properly sharpen it.  at least if i had a new one, i might not have to figure that out until after a few blades =)

thanks
Dave

I actually found my drawknife in a hardware store, it has a flat blade, the older ones with the slight curve really work well....try ebay

If you don't know how to sharpen a drawknife and don't want to learn then don't buy one. Same applies to hand planes and spokeshaves.

My experience has been that older tools are made of quality steel and if you can sharpen them properly they are far better than much of the stuff on sale today.

Even if you find a decent modern drawknife it will only be roughed out on a grinder and you will still need to sharpen it before you can do anything useful with it.

To be effective hand tools have to be kept really sharp. If you can't manage that then avoid them and live in a mess of dust and chips and stick to power planers and grinders. They will do the job, blunt hand tools won't.

The only exception I can think of is a Stanley replaceable blade plane I have where the cutting tip is clamped on and can be changed when blunt. These come beautifully sharp and in several grades to deal with modern composite woods such as chipboard.

I still find myself sharpening these about a dozen times before they have to be changed when the holder cant deal with them any more but you could change them each time, they are not expensive. I have never seen a drawknife made like that.

didn't say i didn't want to or couldn't figure out how to sharpen them, i just presumed that they came sharp, new...so i could do a set of blades THEN take the time for sharpening.  apparently this is not the case.  the hand plane i was looking at said to give the blade a hone 1st, like you said.

I tried finding a draw knife but no luck.  Settled on a spoke shave in the end.  As Flux says keep it really good and sharp and has always worked well for me.  Has a nice "feel" when using it sharp, when that goes know it is time for a sharpen.  Wet and dry stone and bit of oil.

The cheapest drawknife I can find is----$20 at Harbor Freight

Never bought it so I don't know about the quality.

I did buy one from Baileys. It's now $52. But when sharpened, works
very nicely.

The local farm and ranch store wants $80 for the same knife.

That harbor frieght knife doesn't look like it would be very nice to use. I'm all for saving cash, but if you wanna use the drawknife a lot, I would go for one with handles pointing toward you.
