Upgrade Bugs... Please post here.

In an effort to better understand user problems arising from the upgrade last week.

First off, we are aware of some bugs introduced last week during the upgrade.

Several have been fixed and others are being sorted out as we discover them.

In an effort to sort this out we would appreciate it if you post them here with as much information as you can supply.

We are aware of the slow speed loading issues.

Before declaring a bug please look at your user preferences and display preferences over on the right in the box with your name at the top. Some users but not all have experienced changes in those settings that replaced their custom settings. A good first step is to look through those settings and check for a setting that corresponds with your problem. It might just be that simple.

I suddenly had all those boxes displaying that I had turned off like users online recent diaries, polls, etc.

Some of the reply and post story pages look completely different in this version of Scoop from the previous so be aware that buttons, text fields, etc may appear differently than you are used to. It is mostly just looks but could be confusing.

I had a comment post when I hit preview while proof reading which was annoying so if this happens to you and you want it removed just reply to it with a request and I or another Editor will do it when we see it.

Bottom line is we had a less than ideal upgrade but work is in progress to sort it out.

As a strong community I am certain we will weather this squall fine and all will be good again shortly.

However, we need your feedback to understand the issues users are having.

This is your opportunity to give us that feedback.

Thanks.

Tom

While I was proof reading this story it posted from "preview" Very annoying.

That is 2X that that has happened today.

Not sure if this is a bug, but everything is sill much slower than before the move, sometimes taking 20 seconds to pull up a page or 'recent activity'.

On another note, thank you fieldline people (whoever you are) for all your hard work and providing this forum. I hope the small amount of advertising on the site covers your hosting fees (though I doubt it).

Are Diaries posting on the "everything" page? They didn't used to do that, did they?

VF;

I think ADMIN was working on that today. In fact, I thought he had fixed it? DamonHD had mentioned it right after the upgrade.

I am always logged in so I see different pages than regular users so I can't really check these things out myself. Let me know here if it still is that way.

It is good to sort these things out here in public so we all have an idea what is happening.

Should help eliminate folks pulling out their hair wondering what they did wrong.

Thanks for the info.

I mean to say that Everything should include, well everything.
otherwise it should read "Everything except Diaries" no?
to my thinking it is really not a functional problem just a display thing that was probably changed during the last upgrade?
any way i think the diaries SHOULD be included in everything
just my opinion though.

Well, I think "Newbies" should be included in "Everything", Yet it has never been that way, and I seem to remember some good reason for it given by the Admin in the past.  At least new diaries show up in the diary box on my "Everything" page. If I want to help out "Newbies", I have to physically click on the "Newbies" page, a task that I seldom bother with. Maybe old, experienced posters replying to newbies would be a distraction from the goals and objectives of this discussion forum and that is why it is a hassle to read those posts.

i posted a story yesterday that didn't make it to the board, or was removed?
never quite sure whether i did something wrong technically or posted something
that was against the rules.

guess i will wait a couple days and try it again?

or if anyone knows if they banned my request for help and info regarding the

again?

as for this forum i am sure it will get worked out and be better than it ever has been.

Bob;

I saw that post on the microcogen forum and / or maybe about the intro box size?

Seems both were in "editing" or something. Minor config issue that was fixed I think?

Try again. I saw both of those and seems they were yours. They were not removed. You just got lucky I guess and got them in when it was busted.

Try again I guess. I can't figure out how to shuffle stories in and out of the different modes yet but am working on it.

No clue if your feet stink so no comment there. That wouldn't be a deciding factor anyway. We prefer to discriminate on more mundane things like say that goofy shirt you wear to the office on Casual Friday.

Seriously, tho I just noticed there is no insert photo link on these pages. I was going to pop my smiley face in here but can't.

Sell the shirt or use it for a grease rag, man.

I can only log in through a proxy since when I try to log in otherwise I get a 403 blocked message that I can't post due to comment spam from my IP address (actually it is a public address of all dsl users at my isp since each user is assigned a dynamic private address). Once I log in I can exit the proxy and use the site normally unless something happens to the cookie at which time I must use the proxy again to get a new cookie before using the site normally again.

Man i dont envy your programmers at all.
But there should be a place to click on ones own diary called "Your Diary" over to the right.
I'm not sure if it was mentioned yet but there is no place to click when attempting to post a picture.
Like i said i dont envy them at all. but i bet they wish they had that little snippet of code that associated ones own files when attempting a post.
i feel bad pointing out these problems. sorry..

Re: Upgrade Bugs... Please post here. (3.00 / 0) (#18)

Jim;

It should be over on the right in the box with your username in it click on "User Preferences" There should be a link for email and password there. If that absolutely fails get on IRC and get ahold of Kurt, DanG or me [TomW] and we can change it for you. If all else fails I can contact you via email to your signup email and you can send me what you want it to be and I could do it.

You should be able to reset it yourself but the location of controls and preferences has changed during the upgrade. And, as you may have noticed, most pages just look different now.

Good Luck with it.

G;

Pretty common thread on IRC. It is slower than it ever has been and yet occasionally its there before the mouse button fully rebounds.

I have done everything I can but this new version is somewhat, uh, bloated with useless features we do not use and it looks like they are all turned on by default. There is no real documentation except comments in the code and unless you happen to stumble on the setting that does "blah" you cannot find information on it.

Luckily I am not in charge of that stuff but just trying to help ADMIN sort through it.

Why is it that every new release of something, software, car or toaster oven has to have 500 new features?

Off Topic in this thread but I caught this little item while reaiming the TV antenna during yesterdays "Wind Event". A hardware or assembly bug, I guess.

Note the stub guy cable on the left. That stub was whipping around like a bullwhip when I caught it and shut her down. 35 MPH gust turbulent winds. Fixed now just tightened the turnbuckle.

Hi Tom,
This is half curiosity and half taking an opportunity to see if "reply" works for me like it used to.  I have a habit of selecting all the text on a posting before hitting "preview" or "post", copying it to the clipboard, then hitting the button.  You just never know when the website, IE, or the flying spaghetti monster is having a bad day and wants to vaporize the text.  Then even if something quits, I can always open notepad, paste it, and save it for later.

The "insert image" isn't there for me either.  I'm happy typing the html anyway.

About the "too many features" + "zero documentation" problem:  Do you read Dilbert?  It's the pointy-haired boss's fault.

The tower stub didn't get bent while the wire was loose, I hope?  We've been thrashed by some very strong and persistent winds for a week, too.

Re: Upgrade Bugs... Please post here. (3.00 / 0) (#43)
by TomW on Wed Sep 30, 2009 at 02:03:31 PM MST

Steven;

Nope, the stub was standing plumb and square. My current theory after pondering it is the eyes in the wire rope may not have been pulled in tight because I don't believe in that stuff being tight as a guitar string. I did set them all to have the same twanging sound which with them being same relative length would mean they are pretty close on tension. Maybe my highly calibrated tensioning tester [ears] have gone out of calibration? I rechecked it all yesterday afternoon and will again later today to ensure it is not a recurring problem. It only took a turn and a half on the half inch turnbuckles to snug it so it didn't slip far but being a steep angle it was all it needed to be unsafe. There was no indication anything moved or the turnbuckles unscrewed as the safety cable was not under any tension, It took longer to undo the safety cable than perform the fix itself.

Thanks for the interest.

I was going to post a Diary about it but been way too busy with fall type chores, tower install, honeydo list and plain laziness.

I've actually stopped visiting as often as normal because of the slow load times. It puts me right off. Seems like you moved to an even worse host than before... You need a dedicated server, not shared hosting. Thats where all slow loading problems lie... I should know, I changed from shared hosting to dedicated 3 years ago. I'll never go back. It's more expensive but its damn well worth it.

Scoop is a fairly tricky beast to get right.  It is very, very easy to make it slow, even when it is running on two load-balanced servers like it is now :-)

I'm investigating and I think the "slow" issue is related to how images are now served.  I'm going to be working on fixing that this evening.

To get technical, basically the same apache process serving scoop is also serving the images.  This isn't good because scoop uses about 80 megs of memory per request and if all it does is serve an image, that is a huge scalability issue.  The trick is to move the images to a different, much more lightweight process.

Until then, the site is basically bogged down serving a bunch of images.

Re: Upgrade Bugs... Please post here. (3.00 / 0) (#46)
by coryking on Wed Sep 30, 2009 at 02:17:26 PM MST

Oh and one more thing... Scoop caches all the pages as static HTML for anonymous users.  The cache did not move with the site, so all it takes is one search engine spider (say, Yahoo! Slurp/3.0) to run through the site and force every page to get rebuilt.

Re: Upgrade Bugs... Please post here. (3.00 / 0) (#51)

Then perhaps its time to move software? I run a forum that's probably just as popular as this forum on a single Pentium 4 server, with 25 other websites, and it has less than 15% CPU load. I run a nicely modified phpBB version and its super quick.

It's all about ease of use and speed, and phpBB very easily meets those demands. I actually avoid coming here because it's so slow at the moment, and I hate doing that because it's such a great website.

So just take the time to think, is it really worth the hassle rather than just update to something a bit more modern and more reliable? I for one hate the way you can't edit your own posts, PM users and easily mark everything as read when you're done reading what you want to read.

Just my 2p, maybe its worth something =)

Just a question from a tech incompetent, all the other boards I visit seem so much easier to use, easier to post pics and pretty much easier all around, instant email post notifications, this software seems ancient, clunky, is it a matter of being very hard to change to another system? Or the other systems cost a lot more? If it's none of my business just tell me to shut up. :)

We considered moving to new board software -- but the cost of hiring a programmer to migrate the tens of thousands of old postings to a new DB was way out of our price range. Same with the cost of a separate dedicated server for just the discussion board.

I think this one is easier!
"upload file" I can handle.
"insert image" I can handle... if I could find it.
Uploading an image to photobucket, after starting an account and figuring out how to use photobucket, then figuring out image tags and cross links and 80% stuff is a pain.
Then if someone looses interest and lets their photobucket account close, the relevant photos are lost.

First off let me say this. This is absolutely the very best resource on the face of the planet for the topics it covers. Bar NONE!.

Now, those who complain, remember that this is a completely free-of-charge operation, run by a few great people who, out of the very goodness of their hearts do it on a completely voluntary (ie not paid) basis and have to put up with nothing but complainers. Get over it people!

I, for one, appreciate very much this amazing collection of articles and information pertaining to making your own equipment to make your own power. And occasionally, I do enjoy the banter and heated discussions about things.

But, guys, remember (see paragraph number 2 above).

If everyone complains, the people that put this resource up here may just decide that it isn't worth the trouble (please don't do that, fellows!) and take it down and we lose this excellent resource forever.

As to the editing of your own posts. . . Just comment and make a correction. It isn't hard. . . And it lets those who are new (we were all there at one time) know that we are still just people and we do, on occasion make mistakes from time to time. I know. . . I thought I made a mistake the other day, but I was mistaken.

Anyway, I hope the people who run this board will just let the gripers gripes bounce off and keep this great resource available, for the current price of. . .free. .  .

That is one thing I think most are missing. If they have to go to more resources, they'll have to spend money. Then they'll have to start to charge us money and then comes the end of an otherwise excellent resource. Then it will be just like all the other crappy paid-for or advertising-financed crap on the Internet.

To those who keep this resource working and free, THANK YOU!

Very satisfied!

Things in this post are showing up out of order, like Doug's reply.

G;

It may be how your display preferences are set [on the right in the box with your name]. There are different options on how the forum displays pages. Might play with those some. I know mine changed after the move.

TomW,
Funny you should mention that area. I looked too and it seems the new system spelled checked for me. In my bio I put (4) the system changed it to (for).
I don't mind, was wise cracking anyway ;-)

Having fun yet

Well I got desperate yesterday and did a trace route to fieldlines. Located the new IP address. Did a whois lookup and contacted the abuse address at the new fieldlines host concerning my issues logging in and posting. I can log in now and if this post goes through all is well. Whoever finally fixed it, many thanks.

Thank you to all who got it up and  running again!
If we all needed the "latest and greatest" I dont we would be here in the first place.  "Homegrown" "Do it yourself" Nice ring to that .
The folks here do a great job and should be commended!
Keep up the great work and do what you feel is best....Maybe some of the critics could better spend time helping improve rather than blasting for  minor gliches....
You know....I bet they could improve this site just like Google has!! Then everytime you log on for some information 10 folks can try and sell something!! Just type in    "Dog Sh^%"...Yup you get "Buy your "Dog Sh^%" Here"
I think this place is just fine the way it is. Do you really need a bot running things?

I had to use a proxy to log in and post this. I am once again 403 blocked by fieldlines webhost. It worked most of the day yesterday but died late in the afternoon.

Hi,
just wanted to let you guys know I can't reply to some topics/comments. No idea why. I wanted to post in the AMETEK EBAY SCAM  thread but there is no link to post a comment or reply. I went through a few threads and it seems to be about 50/50 if I can  or can not reply to them. Running Ubuntu 9.04 if that makes any difference. I am probably missing something obvious knowing me though :)

Thanks for your help.

I think Squid is an issue. I frequently get this message:

Upgrading

The requested URL could not be retrieved because we are upgrading

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.fieldlines.com/recent

We are upgrading, be back in a bit! (Cory - May 11,2009 - 6:11pm PST)

I'm still having the same problems with different catagories showing me logged out.
I've deleted all cookies and cleared histories.
I tried to respond to a question in my Classified thread but it shows me logged out.
I guess bugs are still being worked on?
Thanks
Bonz

The Squid software that is caching frequently used pages is a BIG PROBLEM. It times out way too often and returns the wrong pages many times. ADMIN Turn it off for a test and I would bet that most of the problems with the board magically vanish.

Things seem much better. Page loads right away. Logging in just took a few seconds. That musta been some piece of work.

I couldn't remember my password after the site came back to life. The password that Firefox remembered was wrong, and the system said it was unable to mail me a password. I was also unable to make a new account, maybe because of a duplicate email address? Somehow, miraculously, after a day I did remember my password, otherwise I would be not be here.

I'm not having problems with receiving site emails here.
Maybe a SPAM filter, since now the forgot password emails are coming from a new IP address now?

Believe it or not, I have had the same email address for over 10 years. The site emailed me a new password six months ago too.

I'm not concerned as I can log in now. Consider my issue solved.
