Upload Picture Test
« on: February 12, 2005, 07:42:01 AM »
Has anyone tried using a front wheel drive rotor to build a generator?

Just wanted to see if I could upload and post a picture.

Ive not tried a front wheel drive hub - it seems more complicated.

But here is one thought..

I believe most front wheel drive cars have fairly large ball bearings rather than tapered roller bearings.  I've also notice that later model Volvos with ABS (anti lock brakes) also use large ball bearings, because evidently the small amount of play in the standard roller bearings is a problem wiht ABS systems.  Not only are they much harder to get apart and work with, but they also have noticably more drag on them - and, in cars... they dont last as long.  So I seek out tapered roller bearings.  I have used the ball bearing hubs a couple times, but they dont start up as nicely and they are a pain in my opinion...

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

I messed up an changed the names of the files but didn't know that it would delete the pictures.

These pictures are just drawings of a different type of brake rotor turbine.

The top image is a front rotor for a front wheel drive vehicle using standard bearings. The 2nd pic is the same but with tapered roller bearings and a reed switch attached to the back hub that could be used to monitor RPM.

Hope this makes some sense. I am open to any thoughts.
