32 Volt System
« on: February 20, 2005, 10:10:14 PM »
Here is an old 2 blade 32 volt system with trouble written all over it. I set it up on this temporary stand and faced it into the wind, it got going real fast in a short hurry! I swung it around by the tail out of the wind! The blades have weights in the centre dosent take much to get it turning, cant figure the furling system out tho, the blades are spring loaded and somehow must twist at certain speeds? On the tail vane under the paint it says "Simpson 32 Volt Air Charger"

Hopefully this will show your pictures:

It looks like a simple centrifugal governor.  Grap hold of one of those weights and pull it outward from the hub - it's shaft should slide out, compressing the spring and feathering one blade.

Yes, You can twist the blades to activate the springs. Is that their purpose? To change the pitch at certain speeds?

The idea is that as the prop spins faster and faster centrifugal force pulls the weights outwards, which "feathers" the blades and makes them slow down.  As they slow down the springs pull the weights back in, the blades go back to their normal position, and the cycle begins again.
