self destruct
« on: April 10, 2005, 07:21:30 AM »
drove my motorhome down to the coast.to check out my 12" dual rotor alt..winds were at 10-20? mph. hooked up two 50watt auto headlights for a load test.nice and bright..

well the trails were calling so my daughter and i hit the trail..left the alt running sence the wind seemed to be steady..bad idea..any way to make a could be, long story short..the winds came up while we were hiking in the woods--went back to the motorhome ,and saw that the blade was not turning..the back rotor had came loose from lack of a lock whasher..when the wind came up it blew out the headlights and the prop went into overdrive--the vibration worked the nut loose holding the back rotor and it slowly chewed up the stator--mags stayed intack..so it all came down to a 10cent lockwhasher.

well i at least found out my single phase ceramic powered alt could put out some good power--used heavy wire with about 90 turns per coil--and 4 mags per coil--one big block.--8 coils--16 big block mags.. i still had a great day hiking........later.

Sorry to hear about the stator, I liked that one too, it seemed to work real well - as I'm sure it will again when you rebuild the stator and invest in a few $.10 lockwashers.  After all the work of building a new stator, I'll bet you put lock washers and locktight on every nut on the mill.  Rich

The HECK, with lockwashers -- with all the work that goes into one of these things, it,s, well worth the price of nylocking nuts !!!

They come in both fine, and coarse threads and after working on aircraft for many years, I can,t imagine useing anything else !!

I suggest after trial fitting everything, with plane nuts and flat washers, do your final installation with NEW nylock nuts, and flat washers -- I say "after trial fit", as nylocks loose there locking ability after being installed and removed a few times..

Very nice job "Hiker" , and love your cabin -- where is it ??   Bill H....
