Getting IT Together
« on: April 27, 2005, 04:31:16 AM »
Over the past twenty five years I have been stuyding designing and dreaming a little at a time of being able to break free of the power loop. I have never liked paying some one else for what I know I can do and have for myself.  One day I will have a system that is part solar, wind, bioenergy, geothermal and anything I might have left out.

I have had nearly the same dream since around 1970.

Bioenergy does not excite me much. I did design a system using 5 acres of Corn to power my car. I have since realized I'm not interested in farming. I like designing.

Wife thinks solar is ugly, wind is noisy and ugly. So guess what, no RE.:-(

Have fun.

I take it you have another? :-)

How is the next one? Did you learn from your first atempt?

Have fun!

At least my wife supports me as best she can in my dreams though our city may not like me putting up a two story building with solar pv's and troughs, wind mills, battery banks and digesters. I hope they being the city give me the chance to show them what is possible.

Build yourself a crack rack with a bunch of mini-ITX motherboards You could probably manage to fit at least 8 entire ITX PCs/motherboards inside a standard ATX PC case, with a lot of modding of course. Very low power use.

Sweet, cute, tiny computers! I have never seen them before.

Problem is they are way to slow, my SETI computers average at 2ghz.

Looking to upgrade some to 3ghz.

Have fun.

I'm getting married (again) on the 26th of August.

How is the next one? Did you learn from your first atempt?

She's a fine lass.  Yes, I learned quite a bit!

Have fun!

Oh, I don't think there's any doubt about that! ;-)

Great, congratulations.

I hope it works out.

The best thing I have done was to get married, is nice to have a good partner to go through life with.

Have lots of fun!

Luckily my missus is very understanding of my little projects (though, I think she views them as obsessions)

We're finishing up the work on a suburban renovation project at the moment. With any luck we should have it a palace at about the time our mortgage is paid off. (we're at the £70-80,000 equity mark at present, so it's going well.)

I bought the empty shell for next to nothing and have spent less than the mortgage for a decent house would have cost over the last 6 years in renovating. Had a few cold winters along the way, of course.

We're more or less committed to the idea of buying a plot WELL away from civilization. Well a broadband line would be nice...

If we have our way, we'll be using solar, wind, hydro if there is any, biodiesel and biogas to power the new house. We've already bought the Class A energy efficiency appliances.

Like you said, why pay someone to do something you can do for yourself. Even if it DOES cost more. What else are we going to spend the money on? I don't really need a ferrari! (Although, if someone has one they need to get rid of....)

I am very fortunate that my wife used to climb up the hills with me when I lived in Wales to sit under the big turbines, look at the view and enjoy listening to the whoosh of the blades as they wound in the power from the wind. If I can get a small rig running here she is all for it.

On the mini-itx front you could have a look at a cluster of mini-ITX motherboards which runs pretty fast (and the newer boards would be even quicker.
