Wow, I've replaced my share of compressors and it's not what I would normally think of as a DIY job. The tools and supplies I need to do this job are:
EPA approved recovery machine
Recovery bottle
Torch, air/acetylene or oxy/acytelene
Refrigeration gauges
Tubing cutter
Vacuum pump
Roll of sandscreen
New compressor
New filter-drier
Silfloss solder
jar of flux
access valves (2)
bottle of refrigerant
Back before the days of EPA regulation, a guy could get R-12 refrigerant for a reasonable price, nowadays you need a license to buy it and last I heard, a 30# jug of R12 was over $500. Converting to R134A is an option but you've got to get all the mineral oil out of the system and replace it with synthetic.
If he bought another refrigerator for $150, I think he's way ahead of changing out a compressor. I've got the tools and license and I wouldn't do it on any box that would sell for less than $400. It's just too much time and effort.
