Well, I have started building my first wind generator. It will hopefully produce 250 watts, I am thinking about making it a VAWT and testing it, and also making it into a HAWT and testing the performance in that configuration. I will be making two different stators, one for the VAWT, and one for the HAWT. Both will be of Hugh's 12 magnet 9 coil configuration, ...dual rotor of course.
The magnets are 3/4"x3/8" round magnets, the steel rotors are 1/4" thick and 6" in diameter.
The first test coil about 120 turns of mystery size wire, got me 2.2 AC volts spining the rotors by hand. I will post some pictures soon of the basic setup. The coil was made out of some wire I hauled out of an old vacuum motor I had laying around so I am not sure what size it is exactly. I think the first one Will be the VAWT with about 100 turns per coil of 22 AWG if it will fit. This is gonna be a fun experiment. And I will try different size wire and coil configuration if I can afford it :-) (Trying to keep this as inexpensive as I can) now that I am hooked on this hobby, It is something else to drain my pocket book (But it's well worth it!)
I have also come accross an interesting site from Germany entitled "Wind Wandler" This is a Helical HAWT and looks to me like a promising design. Although it may be a bit tricky to make the blades... have a look and let me know what you think...

I am not sure if this design works or not, but it is a very interesting design I think I would like to look into it a bit more and actually build one to test for my self.
I have also been thinking about making my VAWT a helical shape as seen on that site from finland I forget the name of it now I believe it's Gorlov's design....
