Solar panel building
« on: September 12, 2005, 02:51:59 PM »
I am just starting to build two large solar panels. I'll use 2 x 40 cells in each. So, I'll get 20V open voltage, and when I take glass loses, wire loses, sun position loses, I think I'll still have something good to charge my NiCd batteries.

I got some hard glass from an old bus. When I look at the cutout side of the glass, it's all white. So, I think it is good for this use.

The reason I'm building large panels ( one would be large as two common) is that in the local glass store they told me that they can not cut this kind of glass.

So, I decided to go the shorter way. Anyway, I would build at least two panels. Now, everything is just simpler.

I'll use Plastecs WB-28 cells ( 100 mm round ( 4")), rated at 2.5 A each.

At the bottom of my panels I'll use some plastic, so no need for back of the panel electric insulation. Between the back plate and the glass I'll use an Al profile usualy used in glass shops to make the gap between the two glasses. It's 6 mm ( 0.25") thick, and the'll give me some kind of a sand they use to prevent condensation in windows.

I'll post some pictures when I start the job in the workshop.

Good to see someone else using NiCds.

Are you using the big round ones or "C" & "AA" sizes?

What kind of charging circut are you looking into?

The firs panel is on the roof, and working.

I got 21.7 Voc and 1.7 A Isc at 10 AM yesterday, at poor winter sun, and the panel wasn't even pointed exactly to the sun.

I think it's good result. I take some time to look for shading-efects, and to look for sun-angle efficiency at different angles.

I mount it on the roof of my mountain cabin, and it's not really looking south ( about 200 degrees (SSW), and the tilt angle is about 30 degrees. I hope it'll work good. I connect it to the same charge regulator with the wind generator, to avoid anothe regulating device, and it sems to be good now. Maybe I'll need to put some stronger relay than 16A at the relay, as I have 10 Amps from the wind generator at 10m/s (the largest wind measured here is above 20 m/s)and I expect 3-4 Amps from the solar panel at max output in the summer. But I'll see and take some measurements, and than decide.

Photos will come soon.
