the great can spray paint debate is over
« on: September 28, 2005, 03:42:35 AM »
for years my dad and i all ways bumped heads on what spary can stuff was best.

the spendy stuff that he all ways got or the cheep stuff that i all ways got.

ya know how frugal i am but i will spend $46.66 to win $1 from my old man.

well it was on now.

we went to all the places that we could go ,in my lil town, not his,

and bought all the different spray paint we could.

we bolf lost.

the winner was the not the most or the cheepest.

for coverage and less runs it's the ace stop rust at $3 a can but you get 2 more oz.

acutualy all the ace brand did o.k.

the cheep and the spendy brand name stuff cost the same when it comes to coverage.

cost per sq '.

cheep more runs.

we have a big brake down on what did what.

so, some times you don't get what you pay for.

this was just our lil test and i thought ya should know.

cuz painting them gennys takes a lot of paint.

your milage my vary

we will see what last.

Photo looks familiar.

I think I did this test many times myself.

Were there any .22's or 30-30's involved in this test?

Thats cool

How did you conduct your test and what made you think one paint was better than another. Was there a durability portion to this test, how long it lasts out in the weather ?

For wind turbines, when I use spray paint I always liked the stuff (including the primer) from ACE.  My favorite is usually 'tractor & implement paint' from the farm and ranch store.  I think it's handy because you can always find the same color down the road.  (international red, John deere green etc...)

Harbour Freight sells a pretty cheap <$100 HVLP setup that works well, though I prefer just to use my normal compressor and an inexpensive HVLP gun.  A touchup gun works well.  Once you've got that setup, it's actually cheaper just to shoot decent automotive paint I think.  Im no expert at it, but I almost always get real good results when I use good self etching primer (it really seems to stick well) and acrylic enamel.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

we painted my s rotor and other stuff for the test and divided cost of can by square foot covered .

the durability portion of the test will be in real world time.

so we'll have to wait a wile on that on.

but it's ok a use a can "for right now"

Glen, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the photo, and that they would probably pop real nice if they still had pressure in them.  Rich

My opinion is that "krylon" is the best spray paint, but I don't think that they make that brand anymore. I think it's Rustolium with krylon in little small letters on the bottom of the can.

A paint such as rustoleum (or any other with rust inhibitors) is always my choice when is comes to painting steel that will be exposed to the weather.

I don't think that it is anywhere near the best paint in general, but for that purpose, it is good enough.
