gas alt
« on: October 01, 2005, 01:49:40 AM »
all this talk about small mags and alts i thought i might see how much power i could get out of my ceiling fan alt --powered  by harddrive mags]..

i rewired it with thicker wire[12 turns per coil]

dragged out my old 1940s ironhorse engine[think its about a one horse engine]

made a mount for engine and alt--results are 20+plus amps into a 250watt 13volt landing light..or at a little past idle it charges at 10 amps into my big 12v batt..

the light is dimm in the picture [didn"t have the throttle cranked up]...

nice little charger chugs away at 10 amps just past idle--good on gas..

finished my saw blade alt--close to 30amps wired in delta-but thats another story.

later...............

Hi Bill,

How is the cogging on this one?

Did you try the new saw blade alternator wired 3 phases rectified sepertly?

Neat! and I just happen to have about 8 old hard drives sitting around! They work ok but they're kinda small in the day and age. One thing I been wondering, what about radial alts given the shape of the HD mags? Could you make something like a complete magnetic circle?

Seperatly, like each phase rectified sperately, then added together. Like 3 seperate single phase PMAs, in the same stator, feeding the same battery.

A couple of people have had better results doing that.  Even more so, if delta was better than star.  Might be worth a shot?

I'm leaning toward believing it sometimes can be better...

due to less resistance than star, and less parasitic than delta,

and maybe if there is a couple too many turns to make star best.

It might help if the phases are wired somehow different too, like different wire gauges.

I might be wrong.

None of mine turn out close enough to the same to compare anything.

Mine don't even look the same. Lol.

ghurd..

might check that idea out...

i know  wired in delta i get a lot more amps than star ..and it really dosent take that much more rpms to get up and running..seems to me if i was using neo mags that would be the only way to go..wired in star the alt. is harder to turn over under load..so you lose out on your low wind speed start up--in delta the alt spins over easyer at start up' but then again it needs a few more rpms ....

your fan geni is impressive hiker, and it 's got be thinking. but i am most curiouse about your saw blade alt. hope you post an update soon ! if you rectify each phase seperatly as gurd suggests won't you be  getting the out put of just 3 coils at a time . instead of 6 at a time in star or delta? perhaps the overlaping dc votages will push output up. ive been thinking about this a lot lately  and considering build ing a 3 single phase stator. say a coil for each pole but three layers thick. each layer off set.

theres so many ways to wire up your alt..

for me i think i will stay with deta or star.......

may try those other ways some other day :}........

im thinkin about makin a 1/4" stator for my sawblade alt..and a diffrent mag layout..

i know i can get more amps out of it..tops out close to 30 amps now[shorted]..

just when i think i have it done i come up with some other ideas.............
