E-Car in stand by mod.
« on: October 01, 2005, 03:07:11 AM »
Hi e-car guys. Well the big 400 amp 6 volt load tester is a buit. At 25LBs. its real husky.

I love that old 400 amp aircraft relay. I'll be installing it in the e-car soon as the main power switch.

All the littel 2" coils made a perfect 400 amp load at 6 volt. They make saome nice heat too.

After testing all 20 batteries I was able to identify the weak and lazy batteries.

I've desided to buy a new set of T-105 Trojens.

Intresting thing. I had a mixture of used Trojens and Interstat. Even with the same low SG#s the trojens did much better than the Interstate workaholics during the heavy load test.

I'm sure my top speed and distance will increase greatly with an all new matched set of Trojens.

Allthough the old bats are not good for my E-car. They will be great at my store for our 120 volt RE system we use there.

The lowest bat still produced 300 amps for a shot time and we only use 20 amps for short time on the store RE system.

I plan to use the Trojan's myself.  Still haven't decided which way I'm going with the conversion so I may use either the 12v 27 series or the 6v T105's.  If I go primarily electric the 6v will be the better choice but if I add the diesel then the 12v will do well.

Still scrounging for parts and pieces.  The big expense is the controller.

Hi Ed

Maybe we could get ibedonc to design a countroler since he has designed a monster inverter?

I got mine used from e-bay. Its a Curtice 120 volt/400 amp works quite well.

I moved the old batteries to the store yesterday. We hooked them up in a 120 volt string and they are powering all our 120 volt dc stuff very well.

Drills, compresor, vacume, chop saw and all that sort of tools. These batteries don't even flinch with these small loads.

Maybe some folks around here with a little more in-depth knowledge of electrictronics design than me could do something with that?!?

I'm in the market for a 1231 curtis for a 144 volt system.   I could probably get by with the 1221 using 120volts but I'm looking for the extended range... or at least that's the plan.  We'll see how it works out by the time I get it completed.

When are you getting the truck back up and running?   What kind of range are you getting with the mix of batteries?

Hi Ed

I managed 30 miles at first. Then the range kept reducing. The old batteries were just getting tierd I think?

I've heard of people getting 70 miles? I think I should do an easy 50 + with the new batteries? Maybe more?

It will be a month or so till I can get the new batteries.

I'll post the results when there all in and working. It will be nice to start out with an all new set.

Jerry, I'm almost sorry to hear that, as I have 12 Interstate Industrial/Golf cart batteries in my little 72V EV.  Oh well, they do fine for put-putting around the neighborhood.  Mine isn't as powerful as your truck, its an old commuta-van built for the Post Office, and it has a top speed of about 50MPH, and only 12HP.  Rich

Off the main topic.

What about heat in the truck?

Hi Ghurd

With 120 volts onboard. A small ac heater will do great. The small ac fan motor will be replaced with a small dc motor.

Heater eliment could care less ac or dc. Eventually I'll replace the water heater core with a heater eliment.

At any rate the 10 amps the heater will draw is small compaired to the motor draw.

This will have very littel efect on my driving range.
