Newby collecting Parts for Wind Generator
« on: October 05, 2005, 01:34:44 AM »
Hello All!

I'm very new to this but have been watching for a while.

I know some about electricty, (Vo-Tec Grad 1985,"Electrical Technoligy" Got scared of a 4860V Line in 1988,Found new career).

Anyway I'm into the "get the parts stage"!

Today I picked up a treadmill and stripped it for parts, ($4.00 USD)

The MOTOR is a "Permanent Magnet DC Motor"

# 59944,  Rotation-CW, Class B

Enclosure-OPen External Fan

Electrical Rating-  2.5 HP @ 120VDC, 18 AMPS, 7100 RPM, 25`C Ambient

Thermal Protector,    120VAC Max,   1800 VA  Max

I don't know if this motor will be any good, but the other parts was worth the 4 bucks

Any Idea's  OUT there? Motor has a red out left side and black out right side, with

two light blue wires going out the lower middle. Testing help please.

I do have a Nice multimeter, FLUKE and a couple cheaper ones.

Thanks

hook a 12v tail light to it and give it a spin by hand--should lite it right up..

sounds like a good motor for a mill.....

It'll have to moving at about 600 RPM to produce 12 V , not an ideal speed but a 1 to 3 gear/ belt will help, at a loss of efficiency.

Well I hooked up my FLUKE 23 to the red n black leads and when I spinned

the fly wheel by hand it got up to 3VDC very easyly!

I have no idea at what RPM but this will make a good starter system for me. :)

I would still like to know what the two blue leads are for and hooked to?

I might take it apart at a later date, should give it a blast of brakecleaner/contact

cleaner anyway.

It was a belt system in the treadmill, I didn't get all the parts, dam thing was to big to fit into my truck under the shell so I stripped it down on my lunch hour at the secondhand store in their parking lot, got all electrical and a couple of square tube

steel tower parts but had to leave the rest.

Now I'll have to figure out the blade size and get the flywheel machined for mounting

them to it. Then I'll still need a charge controller before hooking up to a test battery bank. Am very OPEN to sugestions on blades and controller.

Thanks

The 2 Blue leads are likely a connection to a rpm sensor on the back of the motor.

This could be used to sense rpm leading to controlling cut-in speed or dump loads.

These motors were originally installed with speed controllers. The blue leads would supply feedback to the speed control.

I know you all say to search the board and stuff but,

I am only getting to many ideas and more projects started by doing so.

I really need advice on BLADE TYPE,(8-10" PVC pipe design looked good)?

And what to do with the power after that, (I have 5 deep cycle Marine/RV Battery's

from the core's and Battery Guy's cores, Have all charged up to 12+ v).

Built a temp wood tray on stillts 1' off grass,(keep girlfriend happy I hope)

In back yard with bottle of soda wash down EMERGENCY and forgot safty goggles again at work.

Will get flywheel done after I get a prop figured out.

Thanks
