First steps
« on: November 17, 2005, 05:32:09 PM »
There are so many people who know so much about wind energy.  All I know is that there is tons of potential, and that I know nothing else yet.  Just thinking about trying to build a generator rotor boggles my mind and almost scares me back into bed.  Honestly, I hope I can just buy one somewhere.  Otherwise, hopefully folks will be patient and help me as I start from zero.

Welcome to the board! Perhaps a kit would be a good start? Ed at windstuff. now has a learning kit to build a working unit from scratch. Just a small learning tool. If you look around his site, you'll find many interesting things there... just one of many interesting people who frequent this board. I'll try posting his link, however if you just click on the otherpower link at the top of this page, you'll find a wealth of info. too, mind boggling (for me)... Gary D.

Everybody's got to start somewhere. Build some small ones. You would be surprised at some of the things that are used to build small models for prototypes or just for fun ( soda cans/bottles, small dc motors from electronics, paper towel tubes, model airplne propellers, the list is endless). One of the points of this board which you will see mentioned many times is to have fun. Some of the really long threads you will read on hear are about small models. Best not to try and build something large until you understand some of the basics and small versions don't cost much and aren't potentually dangerous.

And small is FUN!

Read, read, read...

All of a sudden, you'll understand. Well, at least most of it.

Where are you TexasWind? - I am located about 50 miles SW for Fort Worth but have lived in almost every region of the state.

Hey Ron,

I'm in Celina - about 10 miles north of Frisco.

Everyone, thanks so much for you warm welcome and comments!  I have been reading the board like crazy and am learning so much.  Unfortunately, the task of creating viable wind energy and things like wiring a rotor seem daunting.  I am sure I will get beyond that, but... Wow!  Still learning how the board is best used for communicating, I guess I create a new diary entry with my thinkings-out-loud, and of course invite everyone to respond.
