Stator building options
« on: January 14, 2006, 09:55:44 PM »
I have sent drawings for my 20 inch rotors to Johnson Enterprises and they said that I should have them next week (They will cut them out with a waterjet cutter).  Now I am thinking about my stator.  I saw an interesting design on here today and I don't know how to make a link to it, but the stator was built by pouring the resin into a mold without the coils, after the resin hardened holes were cut to match the size and location of the coils.  I believe this is as far as the project has come along so far.  I thought this looked like a neat idea and was wondering if it has been done by others, and if there is any disadvantages to this method other that the extra work.  Does liquid resin bond well to resin that has already solidified?

foggy, the stator your describing was posted by jerry . it's some type of plastic sheeting.  i've done quite a few single phase stators were i embeded the coils in acrilic plastic disks . it very accurate and easy to do. i didn't use that method on the last few as they were three phase and the coils were touching each other.

Smoggy, I think you are referring to Jerry's Diary post 2 down from this one (about the holes for the coils).... Jerry previously made one with ceramic magnets. Perhaps he'd give any info. if you ask on his diary thread, in case he doesn't read this.... Gary D.

I discribed the prosess for bill in my dual rotor diary below.

The fiest one I did a year ago has been running 24/7 in a hydro system.

It used 2 twelve inch speaker baskets for 360 degrees of support for the fiberglass sheet stator.

The magnets are 1" X 2" X 1/2", there will be 28 on each rotor, each rotor is 20" in diameter.

Sorry it took so long to respond to this - I thought that when I clicked on "Recent activity" new comments in my diary would show up - but they don't. So I didn't see your question until today. I still have a bunch to learn about using the board.
