am radio shoot out
« on: February 15, 2006, 06:32:23 AM »
here's one for you late night am radio fans.

you know who we are.

when radio was, coast to coast, x zone, prairie home companion, dr bill & other doctors, clik & clack, money talk & us insomniacts.

we compared the ge super 3 @ $50, cc radio plus @ $150 & grundig yachtboy @ $100 at the same time,

day time and late night.

in & around cb, cfl s & inverters.

the ge was the best all around.

least fade, more stations pulled in, sound quality & battery life.

the cc was realy close for fade & staions receved.

yeachtboy was a clear 3rd in all.

the cc & yachtboy had more bells & whistles, ie..lcd, sw, tv & weather.

but in our lil am test the ge is the king.

on fm there all about the same.

the ge was also the best sounding & loudest on am & fm.

ya know just incase you hear a good tune & gots to crank it up.

Tell you the truth... the most sensitive AM radio I've ever worked with was an car radio pulled out of an old 69 Plymouth Fury, hooked up to a long-wire, and powered by the DC transformer off of my old HO trainset.  AM car radios of that era were designed to be very sensitive, noise proof, and fairly uncaring (within reason) about how much overvoltage you fed it to get more volume.

Hook a dynamic mike up across the volume control terminals, and you had a ready-made PA system as well.

I've seen some old-timers put their car radios in nice cabinets.
