pvc blades & 48 mph wind
« on: February 28, 2006, 10:00:02 PM »
last night we had 48 mph wind.

before the storm i stoped & locked the s rotor down.

i let the pvc genny go & it did.

wow it did.

got extra blades any ways.

i seen her crainking out almost 40 amps for about a 1/2 hour.

we all made it.

but i think the most important thing is that misconception about

"average wind speed"

it was only 8 mph!?

acording to http://wunderground.com.

my battery bank is full & hot water for days.

i run in to that all the time

"we can't have a wind mill because of my average wind speed"

i try to tell them

"ya but you might have 3 hours of 24 mph & the rest of the day, nothing, is only an average of 3 mph"

only for a week or so in the summer i start to worrie about no wind.

i'm in a aws of 10mph.

12 years now we've had enough to run the house & only had to run the gas burner like 2 times.

well just to keep the old bank above 12 volts & not to cycle to deep.

any body else run in that "average wind speed" syndrome to?

My first mental picture when I read the title and before I looked at the story was "plastic knife throwing competition".  Glad to hear you get good use of that 'average' wind.  Rich Hagen

Wow, almost an amp per mile :)

48mph winds 40 amps :)

Are those Zub/woofers pvc type blades. Got pictures of them?

I thought about the same thing Rich said when I read the title also.

Glad it all held together. And yes to your question, I hear that all the time also.

"We don't have enough wind for a windmill, our average is only 5mph or so", and look up the flag is straight out and birds are flying in reverse, the guy is holding his hat, and this is the average day!

the pics should be in my files.

there 6 blades @ 5'.

i'm thinking of gearing it up.

but in a new way...

i'm going to use a right angle gear box like 2.77:1.

1. this would give more top end.

kill a lil cut it.

but thats whats the s rotor is for.

2. solve alot of mounting & swivel issues i have.

ya ya plastic knives...

thats what it would have been if it let loose.
