a BIG windmill
« on: March 29, 2006, 05:36:34 PM »
this monster (judging by vehicles parked down below) MIGHT contain an interesting idea,or, suggest an interesting possibility if i am giving it's builder too much credit. (given that i have not seen my posts show up about it, i dare to presume that here is the correct place to mention it.

my point? IF those "spokes" (use image enhancement software) really are intended to be some sorta airfoils, would this be a lift/drag machine...if not, could some be fashoned and would they provide lift too?

if the image does not show up on here (i generally goof the image posting part up) it is in my files beginning with WHC3

I found your old posting and one of the editors blocked it...

its more appropriate here in diaries.

What an odd thing!!  Seems like if those are blades, that it wouldn't be sweeping much area but its hard to say from the angle of the picture.  Do you know the source of the picture or any place to find out more about it?

It amazes me how much funding finds its way to what seems like very odd/probably unworkable projects.  Perhaps something like that gets built when some government employee sitting behind a desk somewhere decides to impulsively give away grant money or something...

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

Yes, thats right... I dont see cars either.  I do see something like a back pack (or something to the right) - so its not that big...

I think all the blades are the same size, and there are three 'layers' of them, the 'smallest' ones being at the bottom.

Look more carefully. There are three doubles sets of guy wires attached to the top of the object.

This looks more like the first stage installation of some spinning machine used in circus shows which can be put up anywhere.

The question is - how was the photograph taken?

From the looks of it I suspect it is pulled off an aerial photograph from Terra-server.

The image looks like it has too much detail to be a shot from TerraServer.

The "back pack" actually appears to be steel drums holding down a tarp over some object or pile of something.  If those drums are 55gal then the machine has a total span of around 51 feet, the cord of the supports (wings?) would be around 3.5 to 4 feet.  Along the right hand side and up from the drums in the top right corner are what looks to be vehicle tracks.  From the size of the tracks I'd say the drums are 55gal.  This would seem to be a larger machine than the one tinker posted.

off to the left, is a man in a white coat and a hardhat, but the perspective is such that you cant use that for scale. the top of the tower is much closer to the camera than the man, so i would say its not as big as it looks. what i want to know is what is the black hole at 2:00?

Windstar; Windstor?  Are they the same?  They're proposing to put Windstor units up around here that are supposed to be 66 feet in diameter and 166 feet up.  How'd you like to have something like that flying next to the school your child or grandchild is attending.  Scary!

Don't know about the similar names, but windstar (pictured 530g model) is bringing out their super dooper we've got it you havent type device, as described below in their jargon sheet

""The Windstar 1400 is a vertical axis turbine (VAWT) standing 50 feet high and 37.5 feet in diameter. It has two sets of eight twenty-foot blades stacked on top of each other that turn a central rotor. At ground level is a 75-kilowatt, off-the-shelf generator. Guywires provide additional stability in the highest winds. In 15 mph per year average wind speeds, the Windstar turbine produces 113,800 kW hours of power.""

This is their biggest newest (we'll build it someday ) wind turbine. It will have 1400 sq feet area.

I don't think it is the same device. I think also it is still in the "artists impression" image stage....ie no photo's yet.
