Building from what you find

using two Delco fronts and an old motor rotor.

I have the parts to be able to put together

this set-up using stock coils, but seperated

to have the three sets of two wires out.

I've changed the bearings to be able to use

a smaller rotor so I'll be able to put the

magnets on with out any machine work, (other

than maybe screwing down some plastic seperators)

My question is to the number of fields or magnets?

Go with a set number or as many as can fit?

So far I'm into this for the dollar each for bearings

and plan on using old computer power supply's bridge

rec's after running down the pole with wire.

( most tend to be 4-6 Amp at 600-800 volts, so far)

I know rewind would be better but,

I'm still trying to find enough wire for a box fan rewind.

So this one stays stock coils for now.

dont know about the magnets , but where did you find bearings for a dollar each?

Hi coldspot.

I did 14 magnets cause the GM alt has 14 poles. Count the fingers on the stock rotor. that count equals your magnet count.

A large value cap helps on each fullwave bridge. Try to skew the magnets or cogging will be bad.

Ed has a schimatic of the wireing and coil and cap arangement I think?

hi coldspot!

many auto alternators are connected delta to begin with from the factory. if yours is, you could connect it star and reach cut in rpm much sooner than you would with delta or individualy rectified phases.

its just a thought.

The smallest ID ones I've used in the box fan

half inch shaft

This old rotor took the next size up.

probebly not as good as the stock bearings in the delco

But at least it's a standard size.

This was wired as three out with all three other ends

conected together, I've seperated this so far,

Just another toy for now

I'm sure so far that the best power I'll get

will be from the 28 Lb CMI PM motor, but

I'll have to wait till snow melts to be able

to get up to cabin for a "Real" site n tower

Being in town leaves me with short towers for

testing, one @ 14' and one @ 10', not any real

blade sizes also, (why I'm screwing around with "Trim Blades")

Because I don't have any of the

"good" # 29's,   (No money)

And do have a bunch of the

half inch by sixteenth inch N35 disc Neo's

and with the room from using a smaller rotor

I can go with two deep, (stacked on top of each other)

By two or maybe three long, (two fits easly on the lam's

but three would fill the coils insides better).

And needing 14 around, I can only go with one wide,

(11.5" around rotor, minus 7" for the mags leaves

me with .32" spacing between them)

I might follow the skeewing of the lam's on the rotor.

Yesterday I found a short pc of PVC that almost

fits around the rotor. After I cut a section out

for the right width, I'll try to get it to fit over

the rotor with some heat maybe.

(reason for cutting a first test part and

leaving enough to do again with sanding the the ID out a bit)

If this does get to fit over the rotor, I can then drill it

out for a cage to help with magnet placement.

(I've learned about how hard it is to get a magnet to stay

in place while glue slowly dries, and even had them move after

I thought it was dry,{even had some flip over, so paying close

attention to poles is easyer than redoing}).

I also need spacers inside to line up the rotor with the coils,

Has anybody tried using springs for this ?
