i took them out for a spin today , was it ever windy !!

i didnt really get to test them that well, because i have to tighten the attachment

 when a strong gust came along , the wind would pull the trailing edge into the wind..

but they spun really fast  after every adjustment.

as you can see i have five sections on and four to go.

 it looks at this point like they are going to be  8' dia. , or thereabouts

oh i sanded them too , the trailing edge got a little banged up when my test bed there fell over , but they survived

i'm also doing some fan testing , this is the data

the fan is a 12" dia three speed model from smc corp

24. rpm on low
    
26. rpm on medium
    
28. 6 rpm on high

Each blade at this point weighs just  0.9 lbs

most of that is the bolt and nuts that hold it all together

took them out today , it was almost as windy today but not quite as much.

this time only one blade was pivoting into the wind , which caused  a nasty wobble , the next time i go i will be better prepared ,

still no reliable rpm readings , i had two bad wires connecting the alt to the diodes , to the meter , ehh live and learn.

i had to turn the turbine out of the wind 90 degrees to get it to stop spinning .

next time i go i'm gonna take a video , the avi in the first post is of the blades powered by a fan.

on the alt , i can determine the rpm , by the open (almost) Voltage

i'm using a 1K resistor , after the diodes ,at home , so when i do get to test them everything will be the same

willib,I looked at your avi. Download took several minutes.(Slow Dialup) These are test wings? Are they made of foam? Can not tell by the video, how long they are at this point? How do you get the avi link to come up in your post. Joe

if you dont download it , all you get is static , and no video..

so i'm glad you downloaded it..

yes they are made of foam and they are around  60" dia so far

to get the avi in your posts  , you first have to upload it , then just select it as you would a photo , from your files ..

then strip off everything outside of the quotes , including the quotes..

willib, you said that the over all diameter will be around 8 feet. Do you then test the rpm and design the genny. What do you cover the foam with? I finished my wood blades and am working on the hub now, hope to test next week to see how close I come to projected rpms. Joe

yes that would be a good way to do it .

i've been trying to get a reliable rpm reading lately , but Murphys Law has prevented it till the next time , i'll be ready for him then.

this evening would have been perfect , but the blades were'nt ready

the next time i go out i will probably have six sections done and installed

believe it or not , at the present time there is only box tape on there , the sections have  epoxy between  them , but holding the sections to each other is just tape

 when they are done i'm going to use glass and epoxy , or kevlar and epoxy or carbon fiber and epoxy havnt decided really

during the last two tests the tape held up so well that i'll probably use tape up untill they are ready for epoxy , and i might not even epoxy/glass ect. , the whole surface , i am thinking about using it just where it is needed..

they are now 70" in dia.

That little alt is no match for these puppies , even with a fan pushing them , they still turn with all three phases of the alt shorted

i took them out for another spin and Murphy didnt show up till after i got a good reading of 285 rpm  !!

yeah finally..

i estimate the wind was 13 to 15 mph

then it started raining , and my lousy knot tying the pole to the table gave out

The avi worked good this time. Yard work has kept me busy this week. First day I had to sit down and read some posts. I was reading about the Wright brothers, they said that it was the useless wing data that was available in their day that stopped flight. Keep posting your results, I get motivated by seeing what others are up to. Joe
