treadmill motor
« on: June 08, 2006, 05:39:08 AM »
need some info on this little motor--united tech--motor  systems-part #96700..one hp.

90/115 volts dc.--about 50 open volts when cranked by hand on my exersize bike[had it turned upside down]..paid 10 bucks for it at a thrift shop..just woundering how it rates as a pma... just installed it on a exersize bike--seems to work okay--need a bigger pulley on the motor thou..just barely have to crank it to lite up a couple  of 50watt headlights..tried my 400 watt 38 volt landing light-and it was getting really brite..had to back off ..belt needs to be realined better..picture below..

heres a shot of my 400 volt[open volts] bike alt..scary..works okay as a 110 volt alt..

can run my shop lights off of it[floresent]and my 70"s stereo 35 watts per channel[pioneer]--i ran all six wires out of the alt--then hooked all 3 phases in series--this way i can run my flouresent lights and a small ac fan or my stereo..

hooked up in delta mode with rects of course..it barley puts out 300 watts--3 100watt 110 volt bulbs.. real easy to pedal with just the stereo and floresent light..[ac mode]

this is the same motor i had hooked to a gas engine--i get about the same output on the bike...fun stuff....one picture is with a ac volt meter reading between 100 and 125 ac volts..and the shop is still a mess....

any one know how those pulleys are mounted on this type of treadmill motor??

cant see a keyway or set srew..the motor says cw on it-- maybe its screwed on?

needs a bigger pulley becase it hits 12 volts real easy at a low rpm..

with a bigger pulley i will be able to load up the pma easyer..

Hello Hiker-

My treadmill motor, (2.5 HP 120 VDC 7100 RPM)

Has a "Flywheel" that has a bunch of groves for the belt,

A lot like a serp belt on newer cars and trucks

Needs way to many R's for a direct drive wind gen

Been thinking about putting on my Mnt bike

I got most of the tread mill at recycle/thrift store scrap pile

$4.00 and it didn't fit under topper so I stripped it down in parking lot

during lunch hour and got the speed controller and way to many other

parts, (pulse checker ect.ect..)

They said it didn't work but I've hooked to a couple different DC

power sources and it turns just fine

I salvaged to mag wire off it's 120 VAC-transformer

And have about half the coils put back into a boxfan with it so far.

Next winter maybe, LOL

hello coldspot...

likewise i stripped it down at the thrift shop..it was getting close to closing time so all i grabed was the motor--will try and get the rest of the electronics off of it tomorrow some time..i reached 28 volts with it so far when it was hooked up to a 400watt 38 volt landing light.the pulley is to small on the motor and the belt wants to slip..

plus its hard to spin over with that load--a bigger pulley would help make it easyer to spin over--like i said it puts out some good volts at a low speed--so even makin the pully bigger i shouldent have to pedal much faster..kinda fun messin around with these exersize bikes--didn"t really know how much power and rpm you can relly get out of them

still going to rebuild big black..it really surprized me how much power it put out on the bike--its all in the gear ratioS and how yor alt is wired up..big wire with low turns = big amps without having to fight the wire..rpms can be had by setting up your gear ratio just right..just gotta balance everthing out for what you plan to use it for. that little 400volt motor sucks for trying to charge batts at 12 volts -even wired in delta--so i just use it in strickly ac mode to run pure ac gadgets-like my stereo-shop lights and ac fans--kinda fun --no real load with just the radio and one floresent light fixture[two bulbs]......later.

Hiker, to remove the fly wheel clamp the motor in a vice, locate the hole in the housing. Carefully insert a screw drive through the hole and in to one of the rotor slots, locking the rotor. Then get a pipe wrench and twist the fly wheel counter clock wise to unscrew it off the shaft.
