idea for laminate material?

I'm having trouble thinking of laminate material. I've thought of 2 things so far. I could buy "Threaded rod"(the type you put a nut on) or similar steel lengths and just cut it up into lengths which will make a circle, though this would lead to lots of work and sum parts been more dense than others.

I was also thinking lots of paper clips mixed in with glue. it follows danB's wood AX design stator. My magnets stick to the box with more force than the rods and im sure I could buy them in bulk cheaply enough. Theres a DIY store close by, thats about it for my hardware supplier.

any suggestions?

I live in a pretty dense urban(residential) area and places like scrapyards are rare and unwelcoming to people(i assume its since they are packed with dangerous car piles)

Try strapping material, the kind you use to strap down a pallet of material. You can buy it in a roll from most suppliers pretty cheap. It comes in 1/2" wide . some types are coated even. should reduce eddy currents.

the Tinker , are you thinking of making a toroid stator?

hiker is/was? going to do some experiments with them?

i agree with the first reply , the metal banding that straps pallets together is probably your best bet.

You might try cutting from canned food cans.

In the area, where you are living there might be

lots of empty cans of dog food and cat food?

Strapping should be annealed, but I think its a good bet too.

Should be able to get plenty of it free from a lumber yard.

I have a single rotor (half done) using lams from a microwave transformer.

That was quite easy.  Probably still have a pic... somewhere.

Ive been looking everywhere for steel strapping from pallets, All places that have waste strapping seem to have switch to a plastic type. One place did sell the stuff but I had to buy a "stack" of coils (9+ coils). I resorted to looking at the internet for it, seems the price is about 130$ for a coil of it, weighing about 105lbs a coil the sites say. This would making shipping extremely high. I was not expecting laminates to be anywhere near the pricey, for that i could just buy a whole second set of magnets. lol.

I might be able to salvage enough cans. we eat through about 7 cans a week, i suppose a few neighbours might too.

Would chain work? its pretty easy to get, makes shapes easily enough etc. and not that expensice, about euro a meter.(1.25$?).

what are you trying to do , i thought you were making a dual rotor machine , or is that the next one?

no atm im making a single rotor one with laminates, follows DanBs wooden ax mill, just a bit bigger. 5.5 foot blade diameter. its very much like the emachine shop design u seen but with a rotor missing

I changed to a single rotor for ease of construction reasons. the next one i plan on making dual and re use the magnets from this one. i needed practice at construction. never touched building before.

Grind or file the welds off a large transformer, like from a microwave, and the laminations will seperate with very little work.

The pieces bend easy, stay put, are not springy, and the material is designed for this kind of magnetic use.

I see problems with food cans. Thin, sharp twisted jagged edges, who-knows-what material, corrigations, tendancy to fold instead of bend...

I got sum of the Metal Strapping Laminate, will have a good at molding it later to night. It turned out the place I went to first where the grumpy ass** said they don't use it had boxes of it as waste. Sum people are just jackasses for the sake of it. The friendly guy today just pointed to a box and said "Take all you can"
