Vacation
« on: July 10, 2006, 01:28:09 PM »
My family and I are on vacation in Ontario Canada. Guess what I found?

A 6 megawatt wind field being built in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Having a mild interest in this "field" I decided to check things out.

Sault Ste Marie is a city which has some unique qualities. It borders the United States and harbors two of the great lakes. Lots of wind.

I know someone who is working on the project and wanted to find more info on each windmill. He is hard to talk to but I got some great pictures.

Look at the view from here

So there you have it, a short trip to the wind farm and a long way from home.

I hope everyone enjoyed the tour and keep on grasping the wind.

Great pics!!!!   I found it unusual there were so many different styles.

BTW, the photographer needs a new pair of shoes.  ;-P

Thinks: "second hand crane jib..." how about that for a tower? Probably comes with a built-in tilt bearing at the base !

Anyone ever tried this? Cranes come in all sizes and ust get scrapped all the time.

My family and I are going to go take a look at the wind field again tomorrow, hopefully I can get some more detail about the windmills. If you look closely at the picture with the old shoes you will see that the picture was taken from on top of the generator. I have seen some of the pieces being brought through town and they need a police escort due to there size. Looks like fun.

Well I guess you can say that being on top of the world is all just smoke and mirrors unless you have a computer. I'm not going to show you the look on my face. :)

Saidrich,

You're a better man than me. I couldn't have done that! I notice that there only seems to be the anti-slip coating under your left foot. I guess that's where it begins to slope.

Urrrgh. No I would definately have to go for a DanB-style tower. Bolt the turbine on top and then jin pole it up into the sky (hence the crane jib thoughts).

Amazing photos though. Any chance of getting pics of the generators?

iFred; the wind field is located about 15 minutes west of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada. If you cross the bridge which leads to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan you can see them of to the north west. Pictures do not serve them justice, they are breath taking. Scott
