dual two stage evaporative cooler
« on: July 18, 2006, 04:42:31 PM »
I've finished the dual two stage evaporative cooler

below is a pic of a single two stage cooler that  i came up with.

the hot air enters the top stage ,from the back  gets sucked down by the 12v muffin fan and blows the chilled air out the front on the bottom.

On top of what you are looking at goes another sheet of foam, and then another two stage cooler on top..

i just use wet rags and it goes like this all night

This may just be wet bulb temp (75.9)but it is a darn sight cooler than the ambient (91.8)temp .

the probe for the top reading actually reads 1 degree colder than it really is so the chiller temp is really 76.9F about 24.5C

Hmm - questions I have,

What size are the circles and how much power does the muffin fan use?

I am a bit skeptical.  Do you think the heat added to the room by the

muffin fan is less than the heat removed by the evaporation process?

The evaporation process increases the humidity in the room making it

feel warmer than it really is.  How much water is evaporated during

a given time?

Kind of playing devels advocate here.

Suppose you run it for 1 hour.

Every btu that was in the room before you ran it is still

in the room after that hour is up.  Plus the extra btu's

added by the muffin fan.

You gotta get those btu's out of the house!

yes - I think its only effective if you take the incoming air from outside.  The inside air will be cooler - but more humid.  Swamp coolers don't work unless they draw air from outside.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

each fan uses 0.15A at 12V or 1.8W

yes i do, absolutely.

otherwise the air comming from the cooler would not be cool, would it

the outer circles are 16" dia approx. they vary though

here  i cut them out with a hotwire..

I don't see how that is "two stage".

I see a labarynth where the air goes through several reversals, but it's just one bunch of air soaking up one bunch of water and emerging cooler and moister than when it entered.

For "two stage" I'd have expected the moistened and cooled air to be used to cool WITHOUT moistening some OTHER air via a heat exchanger, then being exhausted as reheated and moistened waste while the OTHER air is cooled further by evaporation into it.

Swamp coolers do work indoors.  You need air change separately to eventually get the moist air out and fresh, drier, air in, or you'll eventually water down all the air in the room with your exhalations and things will stop being cool.  But they really don't care if the air change is provided directly by the cooler sucking in fresh air to moisten, or moistening it after it enters by some other means.  (It's just more efficient and convenient to do it all at once.)

A swamp cooler is just a device to do most of your sweating for you in advance, so you don't have to drink a lot of water and stink yourself up doing it all yourself.

i'll have to work on that, that would require a small water pump , which i have , and a heat exchanger , which i also have .

ps THANK YOU CANADA  the cold air you sent has just arived , its windy as all get out. and thundering and lightning all over the place

gota go..

Well it could be.

Heat and temperature are funny things.

If I take my air conditioner out of my window and bring it completely inside and run it - it will have nice cool air comming out of it but the amount of heat in the room will be increasing not decreasing.

If the heat removed from the air is not put outside it will get warmer in the room.

"small water pump"?  Why?  Just to keep the first part wet?

How about something like those dog dishes with a 2 liter bottle, but larger.

i dont know :)

i was just going with what ULR suggested with a heat exchanger , that would really complicate the whole thing though .

i would need a water resaviour insde the unit ,  that water gets cool from evaporation then i would have pump the cool water through the heat exchanger , i suppose

Don't worry about using the cool water to chill the second stage.  Use the cool air itself for an air to air exchanger.
