Gas saving device
« on: August 25, 2006, 01:24:56 PM »
Will reducing the weight of my truck by flying these baloons help with my fuel mileage?

Thanks for any advice.

No Ron.  These balloons will not do their intended job.

Please note that while driving, the balloons trail behind the truck.  Their drag and air resistance is more than their lift.

At extremely low speeds, it might be possible to obtain some minute immeasurable gain.

You could always fill your tires with helium to lighten the load.  However, helium atoms are small enough to escape thru the pores of rubber.  You would constantly have flat tires.  I don't know how th ecost of helium would compare to the gas savings.

If you want to increase gas mileage on a truck, get a tonneau cover.  Keep it regularly tuned up.  Talk to an exhaust system specialist - some mufflers increase MPG by 2 or 3.

Or, simply stop making non-essential trips.

Maybe I could mount little generators in the ballons and power the truck that way. If I put a tonneau cover on I won't be able to toss my empty beer cans out the rear window into the bed.

Always thinking,

I beleive there is a joke behind this picture since someone sent me this a year or so back.

Tired of speeding tickets?

Want to open up spaces between you and the cars around you?

Step 1    Tie these balloons to your car

Step 2    Drive VERY FAST

Step 3    Watch people freak out.

Step 4    Tell the nice officer you thought they were real.

To heck with the balloons...

Tie a couple of rockets to your roofrack and fire those suckers up!

(I believe this lead to a Darwin Award some time ago. Don't really try this kids. According to the ledgend the last ones to do so were smeared all over a cliff - but that could just be an internet legend of course!)

Not really RE!

To the original poster:

With what gas are the balloons filled, hydrogen or helium? I'm not really sure it'll make much difference, maybe if the balloons were much bigger. Also drag increases with the square of velocity, so the slower you drive, the more effect the balloons will have and the less drag they contribute.

I like your out-of-the-box thinking!

Being that they will not reduce the real weight, the weitht that the inerta has to deal with, allong with the added resistance...

No

From the looks of it, you got four in the boat so far. Are you practicing catch-and-release or are you keeping them?

If you want to dispose of empty beer cans make one of those hydrogen generators for a truck that work with lye.  http://h2gen.info/genplans.html

I can hear it now. Really officer I needed another empty can to boost hydrogen production so I could get away from the rockets.
