I've put this in my Diary section as I don't think it fits anywhere else.
I bought this Honda clone 6.5kVA 240V 50Hz generator on eBay
for a bargain about 2 years ago. So far it has seen me through two
cyclones and several power outages. It is said that our neglected
grid power distribution system is third world by standard. Watching
the lines men screw broken power poles back together after the last
cyclone confirmed this theory.
Anyhow, our cyclone season is fast approaching again and I have
been preparing the generator for another season. I opened the rear
cover on the alternator to check everything and also find out what
method is used for excitation and regulation. As per the photos
below, it appears to be a 2 pole 3000rpm brushless capacitor
excite design. I removed the black odd shaped item that I suspect
is the capacitor. It measures 35uF on my Fluke DMM, but has
no markings at all to confirm this. I'd like to buy a spare in case
it fails.
Am I right in my theory here?
