Guy wire Terminating
« on: September 13, 2006, 10:24:17 PM »
Hello, This is in reply to smoggy 's diary posting . I used similar 7 strand hard tensile steel wire used mainly in the electrical line /pole guying practice.

It's hard to terminate ,you must first bend the wire as close as poaaible to the shape of the thimble. Reverse bending the wire in a vice where u want the two wires to meet. U then temporary bind this "neck" with strong fencing wire and now u have a "standing" side and a "terminating" end. unravel a single strand up to the neck of the thimble , bend it at right angle ,and start tightly winding it 7-8 turns. You can't cut this wire with pliers , so holding it tightly with pliers ,file a nick on the wire and gently move it back and forth til it snaps. Do this with the remaining 6 strands.

Practice on a couple pieces first--This is very hard work ,you need strong hands and patience.

cold gal the termination for rust protection .

Well after all that , I can't seem to bring my pic's of the terminating process across to this posting ---- so, go to my irc album and there's a couple pic's on the third llast page ,or thereabouts.

 Hello Bruce,

Very nicely done and was just looking thru your picture files -- loved those pine blades and noted the tips cut back at about a 30 or 40 degree sweep!!

I do that on all my blades, they seem to run very quiet...

Loved the views from your home and envy you !!

   Again, well done, Bill H......

What do you suggest to do once guy line has a load on it? Looks like something that might happen often...  Thanks in advance!

Hi Dan .  Well, you couls rig a nylon rope or similar above the guy  termination , say , 6 feet , by opening up the lay of the rope (3 stranded) and wrapping this around the steel wore. make tis "wrap" about 2 feet, and put a hitch in the rope near where it leaves the bottom. wrap the top end of the "wrapping" with a couple turns of electrical tape .

Now form a bowline hitch where it leaves the bottom of the steel wire rope and attach a cumalong or similar block and tackle. tighten up your guy wire to take the tension and now you can terminate the steel wire rope ahile the mast is still guyed.- hope this makes sense.
