Here she is in all her Glory

Here is a picture of the completed windmill on the test tower





Here is the stator from the back





I am quite happy with the performance of this single rotor larger diameter stator machine so far.


Today it has pegged the needle past 25 amps many times & bumped my inverter off when the battery exceeded 15.2 volts.


380 watts , not bad for one winding of # 15 guage, I can hardly wait to get 2 in hand up there.

Hi Ed, The blades are from Hughs book , the 8 foot set.Instead of using a dual rotor I went with a larger single rotor it has 16 mags 1 x 2 x 1/2". The outside diameter of the mags is just under 16". The stator is 54 wraps of #15 mag wire. I was on your site today & seen the new charge controller kit-you will be getting an E-mail from me again....I think it would match this nicely.


In a super big gust it was a bit over 30 amps today furling.


I have been playing with old dryer element for some fun but the blades really have to scream to heat it up , I was thinking about adding enough in the line to bring the voltage down to 2 volts at 200 rpm instead of 12-13 & running it through a 2 volt lift truck cell to see what kind if heat it would put out.


What a blast when the wind blows :-)

Great looking machine devin, do you get much viberation from the single rotor??

  Nice job,  I've been playing around with single rotor units again myself.  Trying to keep the stator thickness to 1/4"... kind of challenging.  Also working on some really odd ball alternators just for kicks.  Finished up a single magnet 3 phase alternator today... told you it was an oddball.   Works great, stupid simple design.   I'll do a posting on it shortly...  


  Those shunt controllers work quite well, I've built up 3 of them so far and they all work quite nicely.   I even built one for my wind tunnel system so I don't have to worry about cooking the small battery I use as a load.

Nice work Devin, glad you got good performance from the single rotor.


I think it would be even better if you mount the stator in front of the magnet rotor. Much better cooling ;)

It is strangly quiet, I get quite a hum from the dual rotor one I run but this one hits 20 + amps with just a hint of a hum & no vibration.Sometimes when I see the needle buried I go out of the shed to see it because outside of wind I can't hear it running. To be fair though the dual rotor was not balanced as well So when I get it balanced better I will see.

Yes that is a good point, but it complicates construction somewhat.


Hugh did the little 4 ft machine that way but it is an awkward construction, good idea if you have the facilities.


Not really sure if the cooling will be that much better, I doubt that much of the wind blows there in front of the prop.

Hi Devo,

  Nice job so far.  


The biggest worry I would have is the stator mounting brackets.  Your stator would be held more rigidly if the bolts for the stator were near the outer diameter of the stator.  It's also difficult to tell how beefy the stator brackets are.  You may want to make sure the stator brackets are sufficiently strong, and you may want to extend them farther towards the outer edge of the stator.


You may also want to consider a blank steel rotor to provide a better flux path.


Looks like a good start so far.


I can't tell by the angle of the picture, but it almost appears your tail may need a dose of Viagra. ;)
