I found some 5" chrome plated exhaust pipe and cut off square a 2&1/2 inch piece. I then made two puck board end plates.





Here the 16 magnets and spacers are ready for installation. The spacers are made from flat fiberglass rods. They are the same width and thickness as the magnets. 2"x.5"x.186"





The rotor side view close up with the shaft installed.





All of the magnets and spacers are installed in this next photo.



There is a 1/4 inch gap between the first magnet and the last spacer. In the final assembly there will be shim spacers added to each magnet to make up this difference. The finished rotor will have a non-magnetic stainless ring covering the magnets. The rotor spins very true to the shaft. I should be able to get some good numbers for watts vs magnet thickness with this prototype.

Looks like good craftmanship and work there--and some original thinking.

But that thinking is "still inside the box" (a pun--but the "box" shows good wood work)

Nice work and really like your exhaust pipe, a good use  for it! I got around to building my rotor and just look at my files at bottom. Getting closer to a test soon.

Wayne, looked at your files. Looks real good. How are you holding the magnets on to your pipe.


The exhaust pipe has the Ford stamp on it, from a semi truck. Three feet in length, looks like they were cut out to allow a longer muffler.

Right now I am using CA glue to tack them on the steel. It seems to hold for a small spin test, later will use resin if it works. I did change the stator alot last night and will make end plates tonight. Really don't know what results I will get.

I have had good look with gorilla glue, I used it in an induction motor with nothing else holding the magnets & about a 1/16th" clearance to the laminates. It has been up to 800 rpm with no issues & has been out in the elements for a few months. I can't confirm the long term hold but I read about it here somewhere & so far so good.
