My new blade
« on: November 22, 2006, 06:30:43 AM »
My New Blade

Sunday at 3:30pm i decided to make another blade

by 11:30 i was done with the cutting , i assembled it and sanded it monday night

i must say this one came out the best of any i have done so far

there are a couple of imperfections on it

But it is very straight , and surprizingly rigid.

that pink and blue stuff is amazing , the cell structure is so small that it almost has the consistancy of balsa wood.

the first pic is my new blade , made entirely of pink foam.

in the upper right is my varible pwm , you can see the Fet in front of the large breadboard

i really shouldnt use a breadboard for the fet , because i've allready melted a couple of spots on it.chalk it up to lazyness and the fact that i need to repair my weller

most of that rats nest of wires isnt the pwm though

I have resanded the trailing edge and trimmed those little bits on the trailing edge that you can see in the next pic.

i've been debateing whether to insert the next pics

what you see here is strips of paper , taped to a bike frame ( which will most likely be the frame for my next mini windmill)

the shot shows the relitive positions of the paper strips to the blades

it was very difficult snapping the shot while turning the blades, by hand.

but it shows the volume of air pushed by different parts of the blades as i turned it

the first three (from the left)are almost parallel to the floor

the fourth and fifth strips get progressively less, or lower

and the sixth one isnt even in the picture ,so to speak

i was moving the blades about 200 rpm at the time, maybe a little less

i thought it was interesting comparing the amount if air , so i included it

lol i suppose ...

i should point out that the sixth strip of paper is at the same distance( from the center) as the 6 th of nine stations

from the angle of the shot, it looks closer to the middle than it is

Willib;

Nice use of the bike. Question about those blades, I noticed that you are using different cell structers. Is this for testing different foam or blade types?

Very Nice blade structure too ,from the side view it looks like a sailboat sail fully into the wind. beautiful!

Cheers

the other two ,  were made with white foam , as you can see in the picture

this blade is the first i made entirely of the dense (pink)foam

i made a  smaller set  before , with a combination of blue and white, mostly blue with white at the root

and the 8'dia ones are mostly white foam with a little blue

Willib, Good looking pictures. Question...I see you have a progressive twist, what is the angle of attack at each station? I think you posted that info before I was real interested in foam wings and such.

let me clarify my missuse of the term station, there are 10 stations in the standard altons

http://www.alton-moore.net/wind_calculations_english.php

blade calculator (nine sections, ten stations)

I am going to use more in the future , because i realized that i can make a blade of any size with 2" thick foam( within a four inch dia)

a station as far as i'm concerned is a form that i use to make the blades, similar to your wortman FX that you started with , i cut a bunch out , of different sizes.
