My proposed solar setup
« on: February 20, 2007, 01:49:33 PM »
I am hoping that this Portable Solar setup will work ok. It is my first. How about the MK-106 charger (google for details). Gauge of wire? Terminal block use is ok?

JDM;

Just a friendly bit of advice:

You will get a LOT more success getting help if you include some specifics.

Telling us to (google for details) puts the burden of effort on those who might be able or willing to help. It makes folks think you are too lazy to even type a few words of description or seek out a web resource with information we will need to offer any help. I know I will not offer much help in this type situation even though there is a good chance I could help. The reason is that I am not going to go search google for information the poster should provide when seeking help.

Anyway, it is your Diary so I will shut up and go back to reading.

Just thought you might benefit from knowing that.

Cheers.

I agree, most of us are not psychic, if you want help or advice then you should be prepared to do some legwork.

The mdi file in your files section is not one that most of us could open, if you want to post an image do so in either gif or jpg, filenames should be short and only contain letters and numbers, ie no spaces or "specials", max photo size 640 x 480 pixels as per board rules.

I was bored earlier, so I googled 'solar mk-106' without luck.

I had no idea there was a file.

The SS-10 will not like many of the 12V outlet's loads. Could be an Expensive mistake.

The SS-10 could/will confuse the grid charger, or vice versa.  There is a chance the Minn Kota voltage set points (if it has any) are higher than the SS-10, and the panels could, in theory, never add anything to the battery.

Without information on the battery AH and PV watts, nothing much to say.

The inverter will need HD direct connected to the battery with big-ass cables and lugs, not through a terminal block.

Lots of fuses should be in there somewhere, but I don't believe they will protect the SS-10 load circuit mosfets.  I never use the load terminals anyway.

I use a lower amp fuse than the inverter itself uses. Especially if the inverter fuse is internal or soldered in.

Didn't look at the mk-106 more.  I expect it wastes a lot of power. I own some Minn Kota stuff.

Owners of $50K bass boats tend not to care.

Battery Tender makes a couple small $witching charger$ that waste less than a watt.

That said, I make stuff about like what you propose, but I guess for lighter duty use and portable batteries (full batteries get changed out to low batteries).

This one is for a 80W PV, and the socket for 40~50 max. All the crimps are soldered.

The clamps go to the battery, the PV goes to the SS-10 screws. Big inverters go straight to the battery. Lights / fencers / 175W inverter / etc. go to the fuse block.

Thats it. Easy to fix. Quick on-site install.

I googled for mk-106

What has your (undisclosed) proposed solar setup got to do with a dummy/practise bomb or a magnectic/acustic minesweeping system???

I can understand wanting to tow the minesweeping system, but i haven' got a clue what guage wire you'd need for that.

I did find a Minn Kota MK106 charger... i'd suggest you contact the manufacturers & get some specs to see if it meets your needs (forget the bomb tho... it's only a dummy ;)
