Ah, fudge it!
« on: March 02, 2007, 03:58:02 AM »
I had a system crash on my home PC the other day, which until last night I didn't think was a big problem (rebuilding only took  a few hours).

Then I noticed that it took out all my stored e-mail.

Which contained my only records of the name, user ID and password for the hosting service of the http://www.smallsolar.org website.

And the user ID and password for the FTP account to maintain it.

I'm feeling thoroughly ashamed of myself for not having adequate backups, but does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do about this?  It can wait until I get back from Fiji, but I'd like to be able to share the photos and such with y'all. :-(

BTH , you could allways store the photos on another web hosting site , till you can rectify the Pass Word problem

there is google, photobucket

and scads of other places to store photos.

Not to worry, I just enlisted some help from an under-employed colleague and found the address of the hosting provider.  After 4 guesses I was able to pick my user ID, and get the password re-mailed to me.

All's well now, folks!  Nothing to see here, move along... :-D

If you know the former directory names where this stuff was stored, and it's merely been deleted, you can probably get most of it back using Norton utilities.  Avoid doing anything that writes to your hard drive until you do the file recovery.  Once any location on the HD is overwritten, the former data is unrecoverable by any software means.

I'm sure you don't need me to give you the lecture about backing up.

And you need to have it automated. Humans are inherently lazy and forgetful.

I can thoroughly recommend Linux, cron, rsync, and multiple machines connected via ipsec or pptp vpn tunnels and located at seperate sites. This is how I manage the company database at work, but that may be a bit extreme for the home user.
