After a marathon 21 hours of air travel, I've arrived in Australia and met up with Commanda here, who has been gracious enough to show me around the City. I've been downtown to do the touristy things, see the Opera House, and the Harbor Bridge.

The solar panels seem to have made the trip OK so far, I was a bit worried about the baggage handling, but I still haven't unwrapped them.
It is actually amazing to me how similar it is here to the U.S. The same stores, with the same exact items in them. Many of the same restaurant chains, fairly similar construction techniques, except for the more extensive use of tile roofs here than back home, and the 220V wiring, the finish - trim, and furnishings seem about the same. I haven't seen a large number of solar installations here though, but there are some on sign posts, and some of the BP petrol stations, identical to those in the U.S. have some solar installations on them. Of course, they drive on the opposite side of the road here from the U.S., which gives me a start every time making a turn to see cars coming at you in what I am used to being the lane I would be turning into. I wouldn't want to drive here if I was tired, I could see me accidentally turning into the wrong lane out of habit. The climate in Sydney appears similar to that of Miami in the U.S. so it doesn't freeze here, and like Miami, the construction techniquws reflect that.
I've now tried vegemite, an Australian spread which is Iconic here. I was suprised to find that it was made by Kraft. I haven't ever seen it next to all of the Kraft items in the grocery stores back home. Their beer here is about 5% alcohol, compared to the 3% or so of most beer in the U.S. I guess they have different tax laws on the alcohol content, which in the U.S. limits the alcohol content in most brands.
So far it's been fun and very interesting. My cell phone is unlocked, not tied to a particular cell phone company, so I got a prepaid sim card for my cell phone, and got a local number for it so I can easily keep in touch with folks here or back home.
Well, it is time to do some more exploring here, so I will write more later.
Having fun in Australia, Rich Hagen
