BIG One goes to speaker heven.
« on: March 15, 2007, 04:45:19 AM »
Any of you femilier with my dual rotor projects have seen speaker baskets used in the construction of my alternators.

For the last 5 years this large 55lb 15" sub has been used as a load for amp testing amps at my car stereo store. Its rated 2000 watts rms but has seen in exccess of 6,000 watts. It has 4" dual one ohm voice coils.

The enclosure it was in is made of 1.125" floor decking, at 5 cu. ft. its tuned to 35 hz and has a 6" PNR port. This thing knocks things off the shelf during amp tests.

The magnet structure is made of 6 stacks of 3 magnets that measure 3.5" diameter and about 3/4" thich each. The magnet pole plate discs are 10.75" diameter.

Well after 5 years of daily abuse its finnaly given up the gohst. The manufacture only made this model 1 year and has no replacement cone kit.

I don't mind all its parts will now become wind generater parts. So intime it will just have a new job. I could just take the magnets off and use it as a pasive radiator but wind projects will be more fun.

The basket to support a stator, shaft and bearing pipe, pole pices for either magnet discs or blade supports and ceramic magnets for more rotor projects.

We have new speakers much larger then this now. We have an EarthQuake Holly-S that weighs in at 112 lbs and is ratted 14,000 rms with 28,000 watts for short duration.

Here a few pictures of the beast.

Watch for some kinda dual rotor project with this basket in the future.

Wow again!

WOW with the old and WOW with the new.

Well that's what I need if I get my Mazda RX7 running. Teach these little kids a lesson around here on boom boom!

Hey Hank, where's my tear in my beer CD, and Ghost riders in the sky, Johnny Cash version ?

WOW!  I just managed to pick my jaw up off the ground.  I had no idea they made speakers that HUGE!  Get enough of those and you wouldn't even need an engine to move the car!  LOL!

Fit one of those with 2 reed valves, take the air from in front and expel it behind and you have an electric pulse jet.  Audio propulsion.

WOW!!!

At 35hz!!? just think of the damage you could do with a Freq gen and this pumping out VLF sub-harmonics ::_)

Okay maybe NOT a good idea.... what type of mags are those? AND how many items are going to come flying at you when you take the plate off?

I had a set of the older style of Bose 501s , not legal in the US:--) do to ozone back in 76 and those would light up a room when the tweeter would get going with some Kansas  or Boston tunes, but these would've been taking out windows with the way we played the music.

Or you could do what I did, pull up to the stop light and start pumping Beethoven, Bach, and Brahms. To try and drown out the other guy. Classical music can really put a hurting on stereos...

Crikey!  My ears are starting to bleed, and I'm just thinking about being in a car with one of those!

You know, just that one sub would be more powerful than the entire amp setup that the Beatles used for their live performances...

I think the "brown note" is about 7 Hz

With that successor you could probably get a moderate sized town to dirty their pants simultaneously.

10.5 horsepower of sound (less inefficiencies).

Have you thought of hunting for an earthquake resonance?

Well that's what I need if I get my Mazda RX7 running.

What a waste. RX7's sound so sweet for that split second it takes to get from 4000 to 7000 rpm, momentary scream of the rev limiter, slam it into the next gear and go again. Been driving my RX7 for over 5 years, and it still doesn't have a stereo. At in excess of 160 KM/Hr up the New England highway, cresting a long hill in the passing lane during the Xmas double demerit points crackdown (lose your licence, go straight to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200), the last thing you need is Johnny Cash singing Folsom Prison Blues.

Many years ago I built a prototype 500 watt amplifier, followed by a string of 200 watt guitar amps which I sold commercially. I can't begin to imagine what 2000 watts would sound like in a confined space.

And just how do you get 14 KW (audio output, not dc input to the amplifier) from a 12 volt battery? Talk about cold cranking amps.

Hi Amanda.

One of our SPL vans was feature in the Lowridder mag a few years back.

It was a 1/2 Chevy shorty full size with airbags. The battery bank consisted of 16 each 500 cca batteries this equals 8,000 cca. If an amplifier were 100% eficient at 12 volts that would be 96,000 watts. The digital amps we use are 90 + % eficient.

Along with 50 Farrad of stiff caps and several 2 volt hyster cels to get 14 volts

Theres plenty odf DC on board to get to 14 KW and more.

In terms of small dc electronic boxes prossesing alot of power. My E-truck has a Curtice speed controller. Its rate 400 amps at 120 vdc. Thats 48,000 watts in a box the size of a metal lunch box.

Our NW record holding 1978 Ford currier pu has 4 amps with a total power output of 54,000 watts. We burp this power from 3 to 5 seconds once staged in the SPL lanes and get the 30 second time GO to achive your DB#.

The currier is built like a bank vault. Very littel sound is heard on the outside. If you do hear much on the outside of a Hi spl car its loosing presure. If body pannels are alowed to flex you loose presure.

If a car has carpet, soft seats, flexing plastic panels, soft head linner they don't compete in extream spl contests. All that soft gooshy stuff soaks up sound presure like some giant depends.

Just like double-A fulers and funny cars, hi spl cars are built diferant.

I'll post some pix of our spl van that has ripped sheet metal on the front doors from its sound systems presure. I 've got some pix of the battery banks some where as well.

Yep, I geuss I forgot that nice RX7 sound, been long time since I had one, now I got another one.

Might try working a bit on it this week. I got some copper washers for the oils lines, found the big oil leak is the line fittings under the oil cooler, nothing bad sofar.

I'll put the sound system in my truck instead :)

If you plug an 8 ohm speaker directly into a 120 volt power outlet, it will pull 14,400 watts and make the most awful sound, for a moment . . .

Hi Woof.

My Ohms law chart says EXE devided by R = W. 120 X 120 = 14,400 devided by 8 = 1800 watts.

We've actully done that with a Cervin Vega Stroker 18". It actully works out great since the Stroker is rated for power like that and 60HZ sine wave is a nice bass tone.

This was in a 6 Cu Ft. encloser. We used 4 stroker 18"s in our Astro van.

We've also run 4 Fane 24" subs at 12 cu. ft. each in our full size shorty Chevy van.
