6 blade daizy flower gen.
« on: April 11, 2007, 01:32:59 AM »
Just for fun I'm using 6 of Eds white plastic blades.

I'm using a 6"X1/4" aluminum disc to mount the blades to. This makes for a 34" tip to tip prop.

The blade mount fits the 6" disc perfect. The doaner gen. is a GE 1/2 hp. ECM motor.

I've just ruffed it together to take some pictures. The tail boom on this littel non furling machine is 3 ft. long.

No data #s yet, maybe next week? Allthough as I was taking it outside from the shop the blades began to startup rather quikly. I was surprized because the magnet mods I've made to this motor has slightly increased its cogging. The wind must have been 3 or 4 mph but the littel blades spun up fairly quike.

It will be fun to see how it acts in real wind and not 3ft off the ground right in front of thre shop.

I'm not sure what to expect from the littel genny? I've seen 380 watts from a 1 hp GE ECM at 30 mph with 4FT "Jerry Blades".

These bladse have the same angle from root to tip with a bit of a cup and no twist.

I think the small diameter and the blade angle will make these blades tack up real early.

I think I'll paint the nose cone a bright yellow? Heres a few picture of the Daizy.

The nestle (spl) nose cone comes from Lowes plumbing dept. (under $10).

I think it will be a cute flower once the center is yellow?

Heres the back side of the blade hub. Notice the ECM is just setting loose in the 5" mufler clamps.

This complete genny weighs in at around 13 LBs.

Hi gerry , do ya have to do anything different to use a Electronically commutated motor as a generator?

or do ya just hook it up and GO ?

Hi Willib.

There are 3 wires comming out of the motor case. Its 3 phase just connect those wires to a 3 phase rectifier group and use 4 to 5 ft blades.

It will work as a 24 volt with the stock wire connection.

To fly it 12 volt. Just seperate the 3 phases at the star point and "Jerry Rig" it.

This littel marvel will out preform an SW-403.

It has a 1/2" shaft. I've upgraded a few to 3/4" shaft.

Hi Jerry,

I had some of Ed's blades on a ametek motor and only 5' off the ground and they spin in very small wind but got some big wind gusts and the blades all snapped off at the root.

Now I have added a piece of metal at that point and it is holding up well.

Jerry;

I think you should go for the black-eyed susan look myself:--)

Will be nice to see some numbers from this one.

I have one of these motors in the basement , will be very interested in how your does.

Here in the "city" I can't put up windmills, but I can put up lawn ornaments:--)

Cheers

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and interested in building wind gen. Can you tell me about your motor? I thought Ametek were the holy grail of small w-gens.

That's a nice looking unit there compact and a real sexy nose cone looks like a 42 d.

That might make a good down wind configuration.

Hey Jerry,

You and I think too much a like at times :)

I was going to reffer to my NTLsuper6 Hubs as a "Daisy Hub" also, it looks like a 10" daisy in shape, just needs painted to match.

I'll be posting pictures of my hubs later when I get them all here. I had a bunch of different ones cut from 1/8" steel plate. Waiting on the mail for the newest ones to arrive, should be today or tommorow maybe.

Ed and his CNC Plasma do great work!

Looking forward to seeing what kinda of numbers you get from this one. Just 13lbs? Should make for a nice portable type unit for those that do motor homes and campers.

Lightweight, easy to install and remove as needed for traveling.

Hey Ken.

What kinda #s you gettin out of the littel geny? Do you have a picture of the blade support?

Hi Bruce.

Is that a down under flower? I've seen black eyed peas but not that flower.

Hi John.

The GE ECM motor is a speciaized motor for forced air moving in hi end furnaces. The have an electronic modual atached at the rear. These motors have 18 indevidual pole/coils and an armature made of a 3 section ceramic magnet.

Remove the electronics/brain that is there for continual varyable speed as a motor and the motor is a PMA. Unlike the Ametek, TDM or tredmill motor there are no brushes.

The 1 HP will make more power then the above motors accept the very large and heavy tred mill motors.

I've found a few dumpster diving at HAVAC shops recycle bins but they are very rear. My wholesale cost new is over $400. So they are an awsome find in the dumpster.

The allso make a 1/2hp and a 1/3hp.

Emerson allso build a simular motor and they call theres BPM motor.

I just did a wire mod on the Emerson 1/2hp today. The Emerson looks just like any conventional 3 phase motor inside, the GE ECM dose not.

On the Emerson I found the star point, seperated it, added 3 more wire, brouht 6 wires out of the motor can and I will "Jerry Rig" it. Two wire per phase and a fullwave bridge rectifier per phase, then all dc outputs of the bridges perelelled.

I may upgrade the Emerson with NTLs curved NEOs? The cogging is very light with the ceramics. I hope it stays light with the NEOs. If the NEOs work power will go up drasticly.

I would most likley have to seperate all coils and do a BIG "Jerry Riged" mod on this one.

This could meen alot of power in a small package? The Emerson has 36 coils, 12 per phase.

Talk about a small 3 phase motor and its a sweethart. Zubbly would love this littel guy.

Jerry,

I don't have any # on the output, just had it connected to a 12 volt battery and a bunch of flashing LED's , cheap Christmas lighting for the yard,I connected the leds on the motor side of a diode so the lit up only when the blades were spinning.

For the support i used a metal tee bracket that I heated and bend, drilled 2 holes to fit Ed's blades on the horizontial and the vertical part keep the blades from bending back.

Thank's for your reply. I spoke to a local HVAC and he is let search his dumpster. Maybe i"ll come out with a nugget.

That thing is quite decorative.

Might be interesting to use it as a lawn ornament and use the power it makes to run the pump for a "water feature" - such as a small fountain, a fake stream or spring, or the aeration pump for a fish pond.

Jerry;

Nope a cute flower all over Southern MO. Looks alot like a daisy but cuter:-)

The petels are bright yellow with the center black a coal. I'd put up a pic, but the 14F around here has killed all but protected rose bushes, and indoor tomatoes plants.

NTL? you got any growing in your area? you can get a pic of.
