Hoover Dam Wire
« on: April 12, 2007, 05:32:44 PM »
Installed in 1931 to 1935, sections were relocated for a highway project.

"Chinese Finger Trap" design, slightly twisted, made from 10 pieces tongue-&-grooved together, 1.4" OD.

"... enhanced conduction and heat dissipation... lower weight... lower cost..."

"Additionally, the inclusion of the interior cable actually improved the vibration and oscillation characteristics of the line".

It carried 287,500V for the 287 miles to LA, California.

Hmm. 287KV and 287 miles?

The piece in the photo has some sections raised to show the design.

It's interesting.

Copper.  Just the same, but smaller. Maybe 8 sections, instead of 10.

Tourists... I mean 'collectors', had the choice of an inside or outside piece.

And an ink pen and brochure for $5.
