coil counter , high voltage coil
« on: May 08, 2007, 02:38:01 AM »
so i needed a coil winder counter

found this counter in a copy machine

its electromagnetic , a switch closure connecting it at least 3.9 volts trips the counter,

here i'm winding recycled wire onto a new roll, the wire came from a degausing coil from a pc monitor..

that large blue switch may have come from the same coppier.

thats 140g of 0.017 dia wire , kinda thin but i wanted to see what kind of volts i could get from 1145 turns , lol

the coil has a 0.467 "dia hole X 0.587" wide the final dia should be 1.622 "dia

i have 318 feet of the stuff as i calculated , i'm waiting for the resin cooler to freeze ATM , that keeps the resin cool so it dosnt start hardening before i'm done.

i apply little dabs of resin to the coil as i wind it , it keeps everything in place

Hey Willib

I love your winder setup.

great user of recycled materials.

Let us know how this high voltage coil dose.

Nice design Wilib,

I've just found another idea, using a cheap pedometer.

This is what i got

 18V ac @ 157 RPM

 30V ac @ 225 RPM

 40V ac $ 297 RPM

i expected more :)

the coil ended up with 1161 turns , give or take a few :)

i did a load test also , the coil charged a 12V battery to 13V , its rest voltage is 12.54 V

i also put an ammaeter on the coil output , reading ac current , it was putting out up to 1.5 Amps , but it was warm to the touch after that test, and probably would self destruct with no limit to the current that you take out of it.

a fun test nonetheless , and all it cost was a little resin and some time.

Below ,the coil in the test fixture

the other side

coil in the test machine i've been using since i took the MinigenII off of the excercize bike , i've only got half the stator (9 coils) on there so far , but it charges 12V batts at a resonable rpm so when i get around to it i'll add more :)

lots of turns. I guess it was really fun to see the dial spinning.

I also was expecting a lot more voltage than what you came up with.

how are the coils wired together? star, delta?

you mean the nine coils in the half stator , those are different coils ( normal ones)

those are wound with #17 wire in star.
