2.5 hours today off-grid
« on: August 07, 2007, 08:22:46 PM »
I got about two-and-a-half hours off-grid today.  I think I can increase that by about another 15 minutes tomorrow assuming similar sunshine, by turning off a power-hungry process.

Damon;

Sounds like you're on your way!!

What tpye of system do you have? I think in you're previous post it was a laptop.

Is it possible to use the energy star setting to go low power? spin down the HD, blank out the screen OR have you already done that and I missed it on the other posts?

Keep up the posts!!

Hi,

It's a laptop.  Already applied all the power-saving tech currently available and the lid is down to eliminate backlight power draw.

(For the technically minded it's a HASEE Intel Core Duo 1.73GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB disc, 4GB SD memory card being used as the boot disc, running Ubuntu (Linux) "Feisty Fawn" with a "Gutsy" NO_HZ tickless kernel, laptop mode to spin down the disc, and cpufreqd to manage CPU clock speed.)

So did you do the kernel build yourself, or use an "off the shelf" kernel?

I have built a kernel myself but in the end I got the prebuilt Gutsy kernel.

When I have a little more time, and 2.6.23 is a little more advanced and/or gets the full set of 'force-HPET' and cpuidle patches in, I may build a new kernel with those.  Not quite sure what kernels I can mix with which 'userland'.  I've been more a Solaris person in the past!
