My 8 foot "Jerry Rigged" up & flying

Finally have my 20 magnet single rotor up & flying. I have 5 coils per phase 5 in hand #17 guage. stator turned out like crap but I will fly it until the new one is done.

I have 6 wires coming down the test tower , each phase is going through it's own bridge then it's own ammeter & then the 3 ammeters "outs" are joined & going through the main.

Not very windy today but I was surprised that each phase was about 1/3 of the total output not the 1.73... I expected but the stator isn't close enough to the magnets as it is warped bad so maybe it's throwing my #'s out.

right now when 1 phase hits 1 amp the main hits around 3amps & when 1 hits 2 the main is at 6.

 Anyone thinking about useing press board for the stator forms DON'T the oil just absorbs into the wood & you have to beat the H#&& out of it to get it out :-)..

Hi Devin,

You won't get 1.73 because each phase has it's own bridge rectifier.

In a 3 phase machine, two phase are in series during one point of the cycle, but since they are not in phase you get 1.73 times the voltage instead of twice.

In your case each phase is making full voltage and does not recieve the extra help from another.

You have isolated each phase and rectified them individually.

So you are getting close to the DELTA configuration output.

To get the 1.73 voltage factor, you need to get one end of each phase connected in common, then using a 3 phase diode rectifier package you connect the 3 left leads of phases to the 3 AC input of the rectifiers and the rectified output will be the 1.73 times the phase voltage.

Yes you are a bit confused about this 1.73 factor. It is the relationship between star and delta.

All you are measuring is 3 individual phase currents that add to form a battery current. It is just Kirchoff's law, the total has to be the sum of the 3 individuals.

If you looked at the ac currents within a delta connection before the rectifier it would be a different issue. Even then there would be a lot of confusion between average and rms ac current. You are measuring dc mean current so normal dc meters cope and agree. Working out the heating component is not as simple as the dc charging current.

I have a meter with a heat lead , I was thinking about putting it in the stator , maybe on the next one...

How much voltage do you think will be generated in your Heat Lead wires when the magnets are spinning past them ?

Wooferhound, none if you use a stem of good heat transfer material & keep the lead out side the magnetic path.
