Need quick float fix
« on: September 27, 2007, 11:53:31 PM »
What kind of stuff can I smear on a brass

carbuerator float so it won't leak?

Would coating it with epoxy work?

Desperate to get it fixed for the neighbor

so I can get back to the swing project before

winter sets in ( the swing powered air-compressor

and battery-charger.)

             Thanks for any help.

Norm;

Not to be a wiseacre but why not solder it?

Cheers.

repaired the float of a single throat holly with solder.

careful of any gasoline residue on the inside.

Sand around the float crack with a fine grade of sand paper (200-400 grit) to improve "grip" and thoroughly clean it (removing oily residue), then coat the leak with "JB Weld" (a type of chemical-resistant epoxy) available cheaply at any automotive store or Wal-Mart.

I don't want to sound like a "hillbilly" but I have fixed a dozen things with this.

I agree if you have the ability to solder or braze, that would be the preferred option. JB is a good temporary "road-side" fix-all. Meybe not the best long term repair.

update on float fix
« Reply #8 on: October 02, 2007, 06:56:31 AM »
I'm an idiot (and don't argue with me that I'm

not....LOL ).

I jumped to conclusions, a couple of years back,

when I was working on this engine and took the

carb apart I discovered that at one time it had

got water in the float bowl, frozen and the ice

had dented the bottom of the float. So I thought

just in case it might have caused a leak, I

sprayed it with clear ?enamel, lacquer, poly u ??

whatever, anyhow it hadn't worked. When gas kept

overflowing from the carb...I figured that the

float was leaking again and it couldn't shut the

gas off. So...took it apart and found that coating

had peeled off and was causing the float to stick...

cleaned the carb all up with carb cleaner

shined the float with steel wool couldn't find

anyplace where it could be leaking...put it all

back together ...turned the gas back on...no sign

of overflow from the carb after a few hours...

maybe it was okay? Shut it off, turned

it back on in the morning kept a close eye on it all day

...started it up couple of times...kicked right

over and run just like they should when correctly

adjusted ! So much for jumping to conclusions.

Thanks for the help...just knowing you guys

are there ready to help keeps me going every day.

Havin' fun in Conneaut, Ohio

Norm;;

Haha, and you thought remote telepathic repair was a myth!

The bill will be there in a couple days. It will arrive by postal mail, however.

Cheers.
