new alt
« on: December 04, 2007, 02:16:47 AM »
made from two car alts--used the 2 lams and the two fronts..

26winds per coil-9coils-3phase-12poles 3mags per pole[neoes]

wooden rotor with whashers and a screw thru the hole mags on top..

60 open volts..

tested it on my pedgen--first test was with only 2/3s of  the mags on the rotor.

used a 50watt bulb--spun up real easy at a slow rate..

secound test was with all mags installed on rotor--with same load it was a lot

harder to crank over---do to the extra mags..

not sure of the output[watts]--had it hooked up to my 28volt 400 watt landing light

lite it up fairly brite..

may rewire it with 18 coils-and use as a windgen--or keep as is?

it does in the wind.

Apparently you weren't paying attention when 367 previous posts said that there is nothing good you can do with car alternators. Nice work!

Apparently you weren't paying attention when the word "mags" is mentioned in his post.

Hiker, Nice job. Excellent plan. Many questions.

what type of alts did u use?

A wooden rotor? no metal backing?

How did you secure the magnets?

what size mags?

New wire or recycled?

What gauge?

That looks just like good old fashioned fun that has a nice payoff for you. If a fellow had longer screws he could hook four or five of those together and hire two two mountain gorillas to crank it and make power for China.

Great job.

You might want to skew the magnets about 4 or 5 degrees.  That may ease the cogging and allow an easier startup.

Nice. Have you thought about using a couple of stators in factory form. I mean, use two stators with their windings intact, and then make a spacer to go between the stators to give clearence around the coils. This means your armature would need to be longer of course. If you get the stators lined up correctly you could break the star on one stator and connect the windings in series with the other stator to get the extra volts. It would save having to re-wind the stators, I hate re-winding coils. You could even go for 3 stators.

this was a test alt--next one wll use mag wire-and maybe 18 co1ls..

the rotor was made from plywood cutouts[5 disks]

might use some lag bolts under the mags-instead of whashers..

  1. was go1ng for volts on th1s one--thats why 1 went w1th a 9and 12 combo..
  2. could have went w1th one sngle phase for volts-but 1 bel1ve 1 can get more watts from a 9 and 12 combo.---more later gotta run....

but with a rotor from a motor---check his files.................

I'm not gonna pretend I understand any of this, but...I think this is a great project!

Please take some output readings at several different RPM's before you change anything!.

The idea about skewing the magnets and adding a third alt sounds really interesting.

If similar circular magnets could be found with a small hole in the middle, would a stainless steel screw helping to hold the mags ruin anything?

i dont really like to skew mags--its like shorting out your alt..

if anything use smaller mags--so far i dont have a gog issue..[just a strong mag field]

just the way i do it................

there are mags out there that have a hole in the middle--and the screw will not

hinder it in anyway--use a tapered head screw
