ordering parts for 100A desulfator FEB08
« on: February 06, 2008, 03:51:44 PM »
There are over 40 "old" 6 volt lead acid golf cart batteries sitting around here so I'll try to build Donald Denhardt's high power desulfator. I was hoping for a new commercial charger with DC to DC MPPT pulse desulfation/charging from solar panels but that is too far in the future and too much to expect, especially when they cost or will cost multiples of $100. Don has a CIP 3.0 for $900.

If anyone else tries Don's 100A design I'd like to hear about it.

I do nicely with 100 uf oil filled 370 volt running cap and a 40 amp bridge . I've got a pretty good system now .Dump the battery out in a really clean bucket (plastic 5 gal ) wash out the battery with clean water a couple of times . Use one of those plastic coffee filters to strain the acid into another bucket and put it back in the battery . If low add water to top off . This is an AC circuit so plug into a ground fault outlet . ( I haven't had any problems  plug in into any outlet but most inverters don't do well  . just run it up to 7 volts let it cool down and check the voltage . need to load test good at 6.8 or better . 7 .8 to 8 volts on the pulser is ok if it's not hissing at you .

It's around 5 amp rating but the bridge needs a heat sink .here's a look at the recovery room this is an outside job when it's not cold ( maybe even if it is cold) .

A little baking soda on top saves pants ans shirt sleeves , there is usually concern about getting soda in the batt but the it's never been a problem .Holly pants have though .

FYI, I do pretty good with this circuit (http://www.otherpower.com/images/scimages/231/pulsecrg.GIF), which I think is the same as Tecker's setup.

I'd try to get the specific gravity in the cells to be near matching before dumping the electrolyte - or else do each cell separately.

Trying that again:

Before dumping the electrolyte I'd try to get the specific gravity in the cells to be near matching.  If I couldn't get a close match I'd dump and process each cell separately.

Idea is to keep the correct amount of acid in each cell, despite more or less sulphate ion being in the electrolyte or the plates due to unequalized charge.
