Almost ready to fly
« on: February 17, 2008, 11:54:11 PM »
I climbed the tree yesterday and began to set lines in preparation for bolting on the tower stub. here I am about 80 feet up.

my girlfriends pittbull was very curious what I was doing up in the tree.

The tower stub was temporarilly bolted to the back of the solar panel mount and the turbine installed for blade balancing. The blades are balanced now and the turbine is ready for us to install it tomorrow morning.

Is there any research on how much support a tree like that has?  I'd hate to read in the paper about some guy whom was lugging up his beautifully handcrafted windmill but the 80' tall tree he was on fell over.  Please take care of yourself.

mattm;

I agree. I hope he is going to guy it when the turbine is on it. Otherwise the turbine will have a lot of arm on the base / roots, etc. An 80 foot lever is a lot of amplification on the base.

hey just use some wind load formulas for buildings.

I think it would be good, the root stem should be the weakest link

The tree dealt with 1000s of sq ft of canopy, that is no longer there, so 80 sq ft of turbine is a minor load for the tree and roots. the bottom 40 ft of tree still have all the branches to keep the tree alive, and is beginning to watersprout on the top half already. I will have to go up and do some minor trimming from time to time. The tree is about 36 incher in diameter at the bottom, and 10 inches in diameter where i topped it.

but thanks for your concern
