Its Working!
« on: April 10, 2008, 06:13:11 AM »
Sorry been a bit busy here with warm weather finely moving in. Anyway to get to the point, adding more angle to the blades helped immensely, it is spinning much easier and with a decent wind 20 to 30 mph, it is putting out 10 to 15 volts. I connected it to three battery's, and it is charging them ok. The battery's they are connected to are junk however, but it is charging them up some. we had good 50+ mph winds, she was really spinning but holding together ok, and putting out 18 to 20 volts. I still need a good higher tower yet, but it is a working windmill now! Next time I bring it down I will inspect the gears and stuff to see if anything is wearing or broke, broken ect. The big problem here now is we don't get that much wind speed in this area very often, according to the wind speed map we get an average speed of 6 mph, which for my design is just not gonna work effectivly for it to be very usefull. From what I have read even for an axil flux, it still is not enough wind for a windmill to be feesable in this area. Suggestions and comments are welcome and highly appreciated, Thank you , Tony

If you get winds up to 50 mph then I seriously doubt that your average wins speed is as low as 6mph. If you mean that average winds are around 6mph that is a different matter.

If your average wind speed is really 6mph then you are not going to do much good but in an area with only 8mph average you can still get worthwhile results with a decent axial flux machine especially if you go for a decent size.

There is a world of difference between a decent well built low wind windmill and that crazy thing you are playing with, don't let it put you off but seriously consider whether you can build something better, you know your abilities.

People tend to lump the meanings of the terms 'mean', 'median', and 'mode' in for the meaning of the term 'average'.  He probably has a 'median' and 'mode' of around 6 mph.  Who knows, his 'mode' could be something extremely low, like 4 mph, but still enjoys a 'mean' of 6 mph when those high winds a few times a year are factored in.

It's pretty easy to remember them:

'mean' = sum of values divided by quantity (aka 'average')

'mode' = most frequent value

'median' = ranking all the values from least to greatest and pick middle value

Its a rarity for us to get winds that high, I went to a couple web sites for average wind speed for my area and it was 6 mph, for like the year, today winds are at 17 with gusts up to 30, its running off and on not constant, but it is still below the trees and wind is out of the south, we get windy days once in awhile but usually lasts for a day or half a day when a front moves in. I am sure I could build a decent axil flux machine, probably out of brake rotors. I sure wish I still had my shop, I could make some nice ones, make a nice buck off them too I think, but things as they are, not gonna happen now, at least, but is been definitly on my mind for sure.
